So. I'm thinking of leaving for an instance that blocks . I've read the reasons, and it's not enough to play in the same waters as the evilcorp that is meta.

Suggestions? Tech centric, inclusive, progressive is what I'm looking for.

Does anyone have a very detailed and comprehensive guide on how to scale up a Mastodon server?

I'm pretty noobish to Linux but I can follow guides if they have commands and stuff. Though, the only guides I could find were very light on the commands for certain steps.

My Sidekiq has been getting backed up every now and then with thousands of jobs. Of course they eventually clear out but I'd like to just mitigate it by adding more processes or whatever because I'm not even using 50% of my server resources🤷‍♂️

Any help would be much appreciated.

PS. My server is currently backed up so if you reply to this, I probably won't see it for a bit.😬

@BeAware @hazelweakly wrote up a nice summary of things we did to #hachyderm after the initial surge Back In The Day, but i can't seem to find it.

Once again, for those who refuse to acknowledge consensus reality:

Nivenly is not supporting, does not control, never funded, and has no hand in TBS. It never has.

Unless he has joined since the last time this went around, which seems doubtful, Ro is not a member of Nivenly.

You can think what you like, but stop spreading misinformation.

esk,
@esk@hachyderm.io avatar

and the first vote for @nivenly members is up -> https://hachyderm.io/@nivenly/112019849759608434.

we plan on announcing the "nivenly fedi security fund experiment" later this weekend. preview: pay finders/contributors who find/close high/critical bugs in fedi software. we did a mini proof of concept and sponsored @thisismissem to ship a fix for a critical 9.9 score vulnerability in pixelfed, and now we're ready to expand a bit. more soon!

I’ve seen more people talk about the recent Mastodon spam wave than I’ve seen actual spam. And I’ve seen people complain about performance issues on Mastodon without ever having experienced any myself.

Whatever the team is doing, they are doing it really well.

If you’re on this instance and have some money to spare, don’t forget to sponsor the team making it all work so smoothly!

what is our server’s position on federation with Bluesky and Threads? Can someone point me to the conversation if I have missed it? Thx

For others on hachyderm.io, a reminder that the moderators talked about what they're doing with Threads way back in July.

https://community.hachyderm.io/blog/2023/07/07/a-minute-from-the-moderators/#lets-talk-about-meta

The TL;DR is that Hachyderm federates by default until there is a reason not to. The moderators are committed to researching how Threads is behaving in the Fediverse and we should hear an update in a couple weeks, with an in-depth explanation of whatever action the mods take by the end of January (if I'm reading right).

quinze, (edited )

@davealvarado Since this decision in July, Threads has demonstrated its unwillingness to moderate hate speech and harassment.

It is a known fact that A LOT of transphobes and white supremacists thrive on that instance, how many users will need to be brigaded and harassed before you de-federate? I signed up on because of the "Safe Space For Technical Professionals" headline, but I cannot feel safe on an instance that waits for harm to happen when it's obvious that it will.

There was talk a while ago of hachyderm starting a sibling lemmy instance. I think it was decided to be too much or not worth it. Makes perfect sense.

The more I interact with what became the de facto tech lemmy instance the more I wish hachyderm had made a lemmy instance and tried to establish good/nice tech culture.

Every interaction I have with programming.dev feels like a frustrating conversation with a more juvenile version of hackernews.

The week after Thanksgiving will always be deeply bittersweet to me now.

This month, and next week in particular, mark the anniversary of the Hachyderm incident. @nova, @Taniwha, @dma, @malte, @quintessence, and I worked around the clock for over a week to migrate Hachyderm from Nóva's basement into Europe

I am forever indebted to that incident for launching my public speaking career, and to this team for becoming my beloved friends

And to Nóva, for chasing the dopamine, for tying us together

hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

@nova @Taniwha @dma @malte @quintessence It's worth it, though; because I feel all the other emotions at 100% now, too.

The joy we felt at working on Hachyderm, the unbridled hope with Aurae, the laughter, the friendships.

You are all overwhelmingly worth it, every single day, every single moment. I am so glad to have met you and to have helped build

I will never forget this week for as long as I live

Not a bad day. I managed to get the new Epyc server built and sorted out how to run containers without root, then got mobilizon (https://meetups.infosec.exchange) up and running in a container on the new server. I am 98% complete with moving video.infosec.exchange there - peertube’s config files are dramatically different between a bare metal install (what the current site uses) and a containerized version - it’s been tedious to sort everything out, but I think I’m close.

Next will be moving pixel, elk, matrix, infosec.pub, and infosec.place to it. Matrix will be next as it’s running low on disk space.

esk,

@jerry we () are holding out on arch + installing directly to the VM for now.

any particular gotchas you've noticed w/ docker?

Results from tracking 26,309 images accross 1,627 instances.

Then filtering down to the top 1000 instances by active user from instances.social who hhad posted atleast 32 images (2x the average).

Fellow folks! If you, like me, have been patiently waiting to opt-in to full-text search and thought you couldn't yet because there didn't seem to be an announcement that it was ready after the announcement that it was not ready, rejoice! Turns out it was enabled a couple of weeks ago. 🎉

And if you're even more like me: don't expect to find the opt-in under Settings -> Preferences! It's Settings -> Public Profile, and it's up at the top, cleverly disguised as “Totally not a button”.

jasonnab, to random

i enabled my profile and posts to be publicly indexable, although not sure if it's enabled on

I'm not desperate for reach but more wanting to allow people to find my posts if I forget a hashtag.

The new Mastodon 4.2 upgrade (at least here on ) has an infuriating accessibility bug where, whenever there's a link embed or media in a visible post, touch scrolling is slightly lagged vs your finger's motion.
