There’s a growing trend (I noticed) of physical stores asking for an email address to send a transaction receipt… without disclosing that this then puts you onto a marketing mailing list. Very annoying, and deceitful.
@andypiper yes. And they often say, “I’ll send you a coupon” or “there’s a new discount coming soon”, sneaky buggers. Then, when I decline to give an address, the employee goes from friendly to grumpy in a split second. Makes me wonder if they get bonuses for the number of addresses they harvest?
@DrFerrous@andypiper I enjoy reporting the spam from really big companies like that. I hope it affects the spam filter ratings for them, but perhaps am being naive
@Extelec sometimes I might want the receipt, and digital is convenient. I’m grumpy about the way this is being done, mostly. I recently had a purchase where it was presented as “for your 1 year guarantee”, as well. And of course I generally don’t argue with the person at the till, I’m too polite… I grumble online instead 😬
@andypiper the (other) thing that annoys me about it is that there could be an open standard for e-receipts, which could be cryptographicly signed by shops for some actual proof of purchase instead of some largely pointless email that arrives with added spam. P.S. just don't mention the blockchain. I did once but I think I got away with it.
@sldrant@jtonline that would be a decent way to do it. I’d suggest there’s a gap in the market here, but cynicism makes me feel that retailers would prefer to get everyone on their mailing lists.
