When did “necessaries of life” replace “necessities of life” in common parlance? Is it a legal term?

I know “necessaries” is technically correct, but it rankles every time.

Here's some #MondayMotivation for you. I hope everyone has a great week, and if you don't, you might as well take everyone and everything down with you, right?

Migrating from an 8 year-old laptop to a new one is a genuine pain in the ass.

Also, Amazon Music is the manifestation of all that is loathesome and abhorrent in the digital music business. Not that you're paying attention to my answer but "No, I won't ever want your stupid Amazon Unlimited Music upgrade. So stop asking me already."

Offline for four days - what'd I miss?

after making 10 dinners of boston baked beans, 14 servings of meat marinara sauce, 8 servings of lasagna and 3 quarts of yogurt, the amount of clean up is truly daunting. Instead of making I spent the entire day, packaging and freezing all that food and washing about half of all those dishes. Yep, I am I love and but I hate cleaning up!

Morning everyone. I'm tired. I've been waking up between five and half past every day for weeks and I'm fed up of it.

Not a deliberate thing, I mean, that's when my brain decides 'no more sleep!'. And it's not because the clocks went back either, it started before that (and weirdly adapted to the time change right away).

Why is this happening?! I don't want to be awake shortly after five every day!

Yes, I'm back at my desk, but I must have dropped my work-ready attitude on the walk from the car... maybe if I retrace my steps a couple of times, I'll see it in the floor.

What tips and recommendations can you give me?

Dear maker of tools,

I realize my tool is your product, and you have a desire to keep your product "fresh." Please understand that "fresh" is not a quality I, your customer, normally need in tools.

You see, my world of things roughly divides into "tools" and "toys."

Toys are for learning and fun. Refresh away!

Tools are for working. Refreshing one means I have to figure out how to use it again, which slows down work, which keeps me from learning and fun. Refresh with care.

When September rolls around and you're wondering why there aren't any decent widgets for macOS Sonoma, I have a pretty good answer for you:

@chockenberry I don’t think there is anyone left who knows (or cares to know) how to write a decent Mac app, let alone an OS to support them (maybe except the pro apps, but they’ve been doing their own thing since way before they were part of Apple).

It might be that I'm particularly grumpy but I bought an ebook today. And when I was sent the information it included the fact I then had to download the bookseller app to access the ebook. I don't want yet another freaking app to do something. Is this even legal in Australia? Where was this info pre-purchase.

I just want all my books on the one shelf, not on separate proprietary shelves these booksellers demand I set up in my space. I don't require (even more) retailers inserting their apps into my world just so I can access something I bought. Gimme my stuff and I'll put it where I want. No one buys a car only to be told it can only be driven on some roads that need to be approved before driving off. Digital things are still things. I want to use the things I buy how I need to.

I love , but recently I noticed the Boost button dropping a menu that contains nothing but "Boost". Now I can see that maybe the boost symbol had been confusing new users and that there'd been a whole heap of unintentional boosting going on, but, you know, unboost.

Also, maybe, this is a prelude to a longer list of options yet to be implemented, and this phase is a kinda live test of the menu itself.

But for now, what had been a 1-tap process is now 2 taps. Not the end of the world I guess, but it's been a grumpy kind of day and I didn't have much else to grump about.

Carterton is now in the position that our new waste water treatment plant is online, and we've upgraded the water supply such that we're projecting no need for further upgrades for 20+ years.

Now we'll get dragged into Three Waters, and probably end up contributing towards the cost of the major upgrades needed elsewhere in the region. Yay.

We may have high rates but if others had also had higher rates the country might not be in this position.
