My neighbor and friend was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (bone cancer). She is in good spirits and says “it’s very treatable”. This is true, but it’s also terminal and at stage 3 (which hers clearly is) has only a 30% 2-year survival rate. Her docs have not told her this and maybe that’s for the best, but the scientist in me is screaming inside that she should have more and all the information so she can make decisions about her care. /sigh/ I will focus on being her friend.

DrFerrous,
@DrFerrous@hachyderm.io avatar

@purplepadma I agree. I’m trying to be hopeful that she will come to a better understanding of what is happening, but she seems to prefer to just “do what the doctor’s want”. I don’t understand.

Just received this piece of memorabilia through the post from an ESA colleague (thanks, kainoeske@x.com 🙇‍♂️).

It has a Northrop Grumman logo, is tightly packed, & says “XL” on the side, so I’m hoping it might be a flight spare sunshield 🤞

I’m afraid to open it though, as my living room isn’t quite as big as a tennis court 🤪

Another night of waking every hour or so. I guess technically it’s my birthday now. Happy birthday me, I made to 50, who’d have thought. Once again I feel absolutely fine during the night, neither up nor down. The Goldilocks zone 😁

I have just been very naughty and bought a new dress and shoes for my Friday night drinks party. Don’t really have the money but it’s my big birthday! I want to feel glamorous. Do we think Tom will notice the newness? He might

Tonight, I bought a new dress and shoes for the teaching awards ceremony next Monday. I was tempted by a pair of gold Sam Edelman heels, but opted for sparkly sneakers instead. The DKNY dress has short sleeves so my ink will be out and it is like nothing I would normally wear to work. Tomorrow, my mom arrives for the weekend and to attend the ceremony. Life is feeling a bit surreal these days.

We had a super fun (surprisingly tiring) afternoon watching the . The big zoom lens, telescope, and solar filters worked great. Neighbors came out and we watched the sun spots get covered up. The telescope had enough detail to see the craggily edges of the moon. Milli enjoyed the sun and observed some diffraction from inside. One neighbor said “you have the coolest gizmos on the block!” All things considered, it was a lovely experience, no regrets.

About 1/3 of the sun is being blocked by the moon, photo shot with 600mm lens and solar filter, dark sun spots are visible in a couple of places
Outdoor scene in a neighborhood, silver cylindrical telescope mounted on a tripod sits in the grass, blue sky with white clouds above, a large tree is on the left and a row of houses is on the right
Milli, a small grey cat, walks on a beige carpet in the sun from a window, small crescent moons are visible where the blinds have diffracted the light from the eclipsed sun

Another sunny, breezy spring day in NL 💨

The Moon is also in this shot albeit invisible, in the upper-left-middle moving towards the Sun 🌞🌑

And tomorrow evening our time, the Moon will pass in front of the Sun, totally or partially blocking it if you’re lucky enough to be in North America, Iceland, or the far west of Europe 🌎

I’ve seen one total solar eclipse, on Maunakea in Hawai’i in 1991 🌋

It’s one of the most truly awesome things you’ll ever witness 🙀

A timelapse movie of clouds blowing from the southwest over our garden in the Netherlands. The sky is blue between the white clouds and the Sun is visible most of the time to the upper-left.

DrFerrous,
@DrFerrous@hachyderm.io avatar

@markmccaughrean an eclipse from Maunakea sounds breathtaking. This year’s event has “not great” forecasts for most of US, unfortunately. Maybe the next one will be better.

DrFerrous,
@DrFerrous@hachyderm.io avatar

@markmccaughrean

Rather than wait for 2044 or 45, I think I’ll travel for an earlier eclipse; the one over Iceland in august 2026 sounds terrific!

Good Monday morning, friends.

I have a meeting in 10 min about my annual performance review; I don't have any reason to be nervous, but I am.

It's opening day at Nationals Park. I'm hopeful the rain will take a break for the afternoon game. Excited to watch some baseball today! ⚾ 💞

I hope you find a pocket full of joy today.

Should I drive to see the total eclipse?

  • The nearest spot is about a five hour drive away (assuming no eclipse traffic)
  • I have no hotel, so I'd have to go that day
  • I'd be driving from DC to somewhere near Erie, and I'm totally unfamiliar with NW PA
DrFerrous,
@DrFerrous@hachyderm.io avatar

@Chris @mdickens good solution. I’m headed to Ohio Sunday for similar reasons; we’ll have only an hour to drive Monday to get to family in the path. Here’s hoping for clear skies!

DrFerrous,
@DrFerrous@hachyderm.io avatar

@mdickens @Chris I think it will be too. Next total eclipse in continental US is 2044; carpe diem. I’m pulling my kiddo out of school for this too.
