What's the best non-mainstream Linux distro?

Having an option to choose should keep twice as many people happy. The markdown apps I use, don't show any formatting marks, and have style icons. Lots of us outside the IT world are used to this wysiwyg way.

@LateNightLinux proprietary CAD software is a very, very long way ahead of FOSS CAD. The differences in usability being so great as to be unusable for many tasks. Only those who use simple sketch+pad blocks seem to be OK.

And yes, I hate the ‘discussion’ about short haul flight bans.

The idea in principle is fine, but the crux is HOW you do it and WHAT you ban (France bans very, very little) - but the number of people going “ooooooh can we have the same here?" massively outweighs the number of people who’ve examined the ineffectiveness of France's ban

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@trantion @jon
The soft-start ban means you improve the likelihood of getting it introduced with less resistance.
But it also means you have time to find and ramp up the pain points before tightening the ban. Green alternatives are often not available for the many new green laws heading our way.
The DE farmers might not have made such a huge fuss about losing Diesel subsidies if there was easy green alternatives all ready to go. Decades of previous, coal burning, governments to blame of course

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@jon @trantion Right. I'm assuming it's easier to adjust the travel time, over time. By then, airlines will certainly have re-arranged operations to minimise costs, and plan for the next steps as they see the way things are going.

I just install stuff on Kubuntu without knowing for which environment it was created. It's possible that Kubuntu has the necessary Gnome support files to make it all work. I added other app stores too. It all just seems to work without me needing to know how.

Get Plasma, a modern, fully functional, clean, privacy-respecting, non-intrusive operating system now, regardless from where you live and ditch Windows for good.

I install it from a USB stick. It's not hard. Last time that took me less than 10 minutes. I'm not an IT person, never using the command line or any IT things.
Linux is not perfect, but very usable. The distro I use looks after itself. If anything does mess up, I can simply reinstall.

Democracy needs more than two parties. If you only have two, it ultimately means there's only one. The US is a prime example for that. The UK a close second. Democracy needs compromises. Which can be complicated. As an EU cititzen I know how complicated it can get. But I prefer the chaos over simplicity that reduces options. Especially in a world where the public opinion is formed on very few platforms that are owned by billionaires that don't care about democratic principles. Good night.

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@jwildeboer 2-Party, First past the post voting means, you just need to spread misinformation about the 'other side' to win an election. It also effectively kills all other parties. And makes extremes out of the "main 2". It kills real choice. The US shows us how bad it can get. FPTP there, caused the culture wars, and the complete us-versus-them, hate politics. The UK will go the same way.
If you don't have a real choice, it's not real democracy.

@jon Broken seat reservations happened to me once. It appeared as all seats were free. We got in early and picked seats together. Later when the train was full, people with reservations turned up and demanded their seat. Incompetent, blundering DB made us go search for, presumably, unreserved seats. Which we might get thrown out of again. Horrible experience.

Yes 🤚. Except it's not 'my' home folder. It's the 'systems' home folder. I never use it, as it's a mess of unknown files from unknown apps. Even with files hidden.
I have to move all my folders to the Desktop folder, which is all mine.
Linux culture doesn't understand that a users space is a personal space, not to be stomped on by the OS.

@popey We can only get bacon that is tiny after frying.
Perhaps poll:
1 layer of bacon
1.5 layers (partly overlapping case)
2 layers of bacon
More than 2 layers

Public transport journey planning has a public purpose - get people efficiently to their destination.

This planning function might not have financial compensation - there might be no ticket sale involved.

The likes of Trainline then have very little incentive as I see it to provide excellent journey planning. But if they can’t, and the likes of DB won’t, internationally… then who can?

#WorldPassengerFestival

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@schotanus @jon If a private business is running a monopoly like service, then their incentive is to cut costs, not provide a better service. As people can't immediately go elsewhere, and sales won't change much.

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@schotanus @jon If passengers can't choose a different service for a journey, as one company has the franchise, that is monopolistic. And you rely on their priorities. It's the same with a public organisation. But their priorities can be defined to be in the interests of passengers and not shareholders.
