Weaponizing hanlon's razor has long been a thing in politics -- particularly North American ones -- but it's really come into vogue in the business world in recent decades. It's much easier for malice to succeed when masquerading as stupidity. Underestimate at your peril.

reinhilde,

@trendless I've used a reverse Hanlon for a bit now

@trendless @reinhilde Never attribute to stupidity that which can be adequately explained by malice.

@dalias @trendless @reinhilde I use the crypto heuristic, "it doesn't matter which, just never trust those people ever again". Sam Altman is one example.

@dalias @trendless @reinhilde PS this also means that the former board of OpenAI included a critical mass of unqualified people, because they were in a position of corporate responsibility, did not know the crypto heuristic, and hired Sam Altman.

reinhilde,

@trendless never attribute to benign stupidity what malignant/malicious stupidity adequately explains
