Like 20 years ago, I went to a talk given by a Famous Linguist (i know, shut up).

It was widely attended by the University and other general public. "FAMOUS LINGUIST COMES TO [My BigCity University]"

The talk was terrible.

His description of Linguistics was farcically bad. He was manifestly being a moron & every linguist there thought so. In fact, within Linguistics, the talk hurt his career significantly.

Afterwards, I went out to lunch with a highly-respected Semanticist. I bitched about said talk (because, I mean, look at my feed).

His response: "It was a popular talk."

You see, when given the chance at fame and general recognition, a very intelligent expert may suddenly produce bad/wrong/stupid stuff. They know they're doing it. They want to be famous SO bad. SO bad. SO SO BAD. It's ALMOST WITHIN REACH YOU MOTHERFUCKERS.

They may become a complete baboon, in fact.

Just sayin…

It would work.

What hath public health wrought?

reinhilde,

@trendless the client’s response should be “then according to applicable human rights and disability access laws I am not required to attend this appointment.”

@compost My super fancy compost bin. Anyone can build one with spare materials or even just have a pile. The bin helps keep out small animals and my dog from the pile for me. Once every years a bear comes along and opens it like a cardboard box so I don't fuss about it being nice. What type of bin if any do other people use?

reinhilde,

@jbussieres @compost i use a plastic bin which I’ve confined in my (tattered) greenhouse. I live in a city zone, but we do have to be able to mitigate bears, and I fear I can’t do that.

the robotgirl was told by her new owner to download this strange binary, and that it would give her happiness, along with new features. so, of course she did -- not like she could push back on it anyways.

unfortunately, that binary was xz 5.6.0 ... and what owner couldn't resist inserting themself into a robotgirl's cute, vulnerable backdoor?

One of the most annoying things about being an English-language content creator are the Americans who insist that everything must be about them.

I can make a video that never mentions the US once, and I will get hundreds of responses about the US.

I will get people claiming that I'm wrong because of some issue unique to the US.

I will get Americans telling me that I have a moral responsibility to help them fix their cities, despite the fact that I'm not American and I don't live there.

reinhilde,

@notjustbikes @alda No respect for the English?

reinhilde,

@alda You are accusing me of a level of sophistication with the Icelandic language that I do not possess.

I was suggesting a way NJB might cloak his America’s snowy hat origin.

lea, (edited ) to random

If you're not from the US and want to travel here. Don't.

I thought as a (German and white) visitor I'm gonna be fine.

Border and customs protection took my phone, forced me to unlock it and stole god knows what data from it. The agent was powertripping and made sure to let me know that I am powerless and he can just send me home or do godknowswhat to me.

He directly said "if you're annoying I'm just sending you home".

Apparently my trans ass was part of a "random search". Lol.

I'm fine now and with Lexi luckily. I don't know what kind of malware is on my phone, or what they took from it. I've been crying all throughout my connecting flight.

This place is a dystopian shithole. Please don't go here.

:boost_ok: ❤️

reinhilde,

@lea Your phone probably has to be chipped up. The US is a totalitarian hellscape.

If I go, I won’t bring my phone, at the very least.

This morning I'm reminded of a person I knew, who would treat everything as an attack, or the potential for one.

You might say "good morning" to them, and their reply would be a snapped "what do you want?".

It's rather difficult to deal with, because any reply to this would get twisted out of shape in similar way.

So what do you do? Ignore them? Seems like the only way.

Except... it must be hell to live like this. And nobody chooses this kind of hell for themselves. This is trauma...

reinhilde,
