@gruber The Apple headset hasn’t even been announced. Weird to call out a headline like this one and not the ones that act like the headset will fly off the shelves and be the greatest thing since sliced bread.
@gruber The best comment: “I'm not sure beating someone to the punch is the right metaphor, here. It's more like announcing that you're going to punch someone in a few months, in anticipation of them punching you next week.”
@gruber And the second sentence also means the real meta announcement will be later (sept 27 is not next week) even if apple is released after the fall. No punches beaten (and apple doesn’t care anyway).
@gruber So, uh … did the journalists forget about Microsoft’s consumer-grade MR (Mixed Reality) devices, let alone the fact that Oculus has made VR devices for an eternity, HTC Vive, Microsoft Hololens for the Enterprise market, Google Glass. I mean, as you know already of course, Apple is often not first — they innovate their way to win first place within a category. Example: Cellular-equipped PDAs had been around for years before the first iPhone and iPod was late to the stage.
@gruber haven’t read it in full but one thing to keep in mind is both won’t ship until the end of the year (Quest 3 confirmed for around October, the other rumored for late Q4-ish).
@gruber Headlines are broken. They do not function to accurately describe an article; their primary function today is to inspire people to click regardless of what the article says.
