Discovered an excellent new word today: dreich. Bleak, miserable, cheerless, dreary. It even sounds exactly right when you say. No this is not a comment on my current state of mind. Not at all.

dcrooks,
@dcrooks@mastodon.scot avatar

@ElleGray A fine Scottish word; most often used in reference to the weather - not raining, but drizzling, overcast, neither one thing or the other; driech.

Next on the Scottish word list, if I may present: “outwith”: outside of, excepting. “Outwith these circumstances, this is what we need to do”

@gruber I think it’s good that Apple has apologised for the Crush ad; it would be even better to hear about the choices that lead to - eg the piano - being crushed.

Were those new things, or recycled/recovered things?

dcrooks,
@dcrooks@mastodon.scot avatar

@gruber Yes, I think so.

As a trillion dollar company, buying a piano (which was my most visceral reaction) is nothing to them; but that same piano could have been given to a school or a community and given years of music.

Whereas using piano that had already been used for years and years, but was in need of replacement, would be different.

If Apple wants to demonstrate that they have music in their DNA, there are better ways of showing it than this.

I realise, or acknowledge - as I begin yet another playthrough of Forbidden West (once more into The Daunt) - that’s it’s my comfort game, and I’m ok with that.

Have I considered a Legion Go so that I can play it on trips? Yes. Yes I have.

Have I considered an eGPU to go with it thanks to @viticci? YES, against my better judgement.

The past 8 years have not been simple. I have had to build a new life. I have spent time in institutions and been diagnosed Schizophrenic. Importantly I was also diagnosed Autistic (that will be 8 years ago next November).

It occurs to me that, when I first joined Mastodon, I was keen for the big accounts on Twitter to come over so it could feel like a proper replacement.

But here I am, almost eighteen months later somewhat glad that they didn’t. Because bigger accounts means corporate accounts, means advertising and bullshit. And there’s none of that.

No Burger King account throwing corporate shade at McDonald’s for The Numbers and “LOL”s.

It’s nice.

@DJDarren @TheBreadmonkey I 100% agree. When Threads started, I signed up and was greeted with a torrent of celebrity and brand nonsense.

I came straight back here

I’m not sure if I’ve repped for @NoraReed in a minute but let me do so again.

Nora makes gorgeous glass jewellery, including trans pride pendants that are so lovely I bought one having no one to give it to (hashtag turns out it was for me but that’s another story)

If you like nice things please visit https://nora.jewelry - you will find nice things.

@danielpunkass Hi - I apologise, since you have no idea who I am.

It occurred to me that it would be really excellent to have the capabilities of MarsEdit on iOS/iPadOS. Is that something you’ve considered? (It probably is)

dcrooks,
@dcrooks@mastodon.scot avatar

@danielpunkass That’s fab, thanks :-)

I’ve just started using micro.blog, so I’m very happy to have a chance to use MarsEdit in anger - so then also looking forward to an iOS version!

But, you know, maybe I should get into crosswords :-)

Day one of Vision Pro sales may pay for the developer strap, at least.

dcrooks,
@dcrooks@mastodon.scot avatar

@jamesthomson It’s good to have goals.

I think I missed - are you getting/do you have a Vision Pro?

dcrooks,
@dcrooks@mastodon.scot avatar

@jamesthomson Ah, right, I do now remember seeing your photo.

This is a weird launch as a non-developer: there’s zero chance of me buying one, and the experience of using it is very personal (I guess). But with all the new apps it’s clearly super interesting…

dcrooks,
@dcrooks@mastodon.scot avatar

@jamesthomson Yeah, agreed.

I do realise that this is going to put a lot of weight on people describing the experience (let me go ahead and tag @jsnell and @imyke ) - speaking as someone who’s never tried VR/AR (my glasses have always got in the way), I have no frame of reference for the Vision Pro, and the experience sounds more visceral than, eg, “here’s a new iPad”

    Starting from a conversation with @ElleGray : if you’re aware of any therapeutic studies involving Muppets, I want to hear them and I’ll boost.

    @ElleGray at the risk of being serious: I truly wonder about the therapeutic benefits of the muppets, I need to see if anyone has done studies.

    Hopefully at least a half dozen of these budding lemons will hang on and mature into full fruit. The plant is covered in them at the moment but can’t sustain them all so most of them fall off. Fingers crossed a few hang on though! 🍋
