Masha Gessen on cultural memory, the Holocaust, and Gaza war. (obvious CWs)

"The fight over one rightful claim to victimhood runs on forever."

When I posted this yesterday I did not know that Germany was canceling Masha Gessen for "antisemitism"*

*less glibly, that Gessen was wading into the dynamics described in the essay, when a sponsor of a German literary prize they were to award Gessen canceled their sponsorship in reaction to the essay

jrp,

@Can-crisociality 🦀〰️🥫 The whole of Germany cancels Masha Gessen? That's complete crap.

  • jrp,

@Can-crisociality 🦀〰️🥫 No, no not argueing. I suppose i have to read the whole thread. However i am reading you saying "I did not know that Germany was canceling Masha Gessen for "antisemitism"" - the whole of Germany is a bit of a broad address there. We have as much diversity as anybody else in this or any other regard. And we don't all eat potatoes or drink beer neither.

She received the price and the award ceremony took place, but the German governing party that co-sponsors the price protested and didn't attend the event. Personally, I don't feel the protest was warranted, but don't think that's "cancelling" either. It's wiser not to use the term indiscriminately. Let's leave that to the right-wing populists.

@inquiline the linked Jerusalem Declaration is really good and seems helpful in the context of Fediverse moderation.

Gessen in the essay above: "There are now dozens of antisemitism commissioners throughout Germany. They have no single job description or legal framework for their work, but much of it appears to consist of publicly shaming those they see as antisemitic, often for “de-singularizing the Holocaust” or for criticizing Israel. Hardly any of these commissioners are Jewish. Indeed, the proportion of Jews among their targets is certainly higher."

@inquiline I still think the Jews should be mad at the Italians, who kind of ruined things for nearly 2k years.
