I'll say the same thing about Threads today as I said last year.

Allowing others who have never looked at Mastodon and the rest of the Fediverse a glance at how good we have it here, can't be anything other then a good thing.

I'm interested to see how many Thread users abandon ship for Mastodon? I think the first few months will be very interesting.

@Mrfunkedude And as always evertime this comes up, there's a split in the fediverse. Camps:

  1. neutral - lets wait and see
  2. pro - this can only be good
  3. noooooo, meta/big corpo is bad, this is EEE and everything will be rooooined! and you're a terrible person if you even agree to it I block you now.

its amusing, a little dissapointing, and a leetle bit terrifying to watch.

leighms,

@tezoatlipoca @Mrfunkedude

Having been on here a while and become aware of the groups who adopted Mastodon in the early days and were very involved with nurturing and developing Mastodon I get that some of them are reacting with horror at Meta jumping onto the Fediverse.
Many of these groups were harassed and victimised on mainstream social media. They came to Mastodon to escape and the trolling that went on.

Now thatworld they were escaping from is tying up to their liferaft

@leighms @tezoatlipoca I don't know if you've noticed but that's been happening since last year when Musk started killing Twitter and it's still happening today.

From what I've seen they end up leaving Mastodon once they see they won't get the same attention here that they got on Twitter or Facebook or wherever they come from.

leighms,

@Mrfunkedude @tezoatlipoca
I've noticed quite a few popping up and expressing underwhelmedness.

Think some really need that algorithm in their life.
Guess the difference here is that you have to make your own vibe rather than getting that walking into a party experience laid on.

@leighms @tezoatlipoca It's SO easy to block trolls and report them that I almost pity the troll who has to go through all of the trouble to rant and make new accounts just to stroke their egos and all I have to do is make three clicks on the mouse to ban them.

It almost doesn't seem fair.

HeathAllyn,

@Mrfunkedude honestly I’m loving threads. It’s the best twit-like experience I’ve had in a really long time.

scttgrd,

@Mrfunkedude

There are a lot of us that don't want that, I'm genuinely trying to understand the desperate need to drag everyone to that space? We came here to get away from that.

Mrfunkedude,
@Mrfunkedude@mastodon.social avatar

@scttgrd I wouldn’t call it “desperate need to drag everyone to that space“. I don’t have a need to do it at all. However, I don’t fear it either.

Call me being overly optimistic, but I sincerely believe that the Fediverse is a different animal. Last year when people were migrating here from Twitter, the one thing I kept reading over and over again, were people saying how they couldn’t believe how different the vibe here was.

I believe in that vibe.

scttgrd,

@Mrfunkedude
The people that wanted those things already made their choice. Now it's like here try it you will like it? Really?

Mrfunkedude,
@Mrfunkedude@mastodon.social avatar

@scttgrd 🤷‍♂️ I like to believe that if given the choice, most people would rather be a user, than the product.

I could be wrong. I think we’re going to find out.

scttgrd,

@Mrfunkedude

If the federation happens here I will find greener pastures. Don't crap where you eat.

pixelpusher220,

@Mrfunkedude yeah I'm mostly of the same opinion. But FB just isn't going to 'change' ActivityPub and the fediverse. If they try to make their site incompatible, then we simply won't see them or they us.

My main concern is technical related to scale and small instances. If 20,000 threads users report posts... That's a significant moderation issue most volunteer instances won't be up to handle very often.
/1

pixelpusher220,

@Mrfunkedude Someone pointed out the all Fedi feed. I'd hope that's an option to turn off cuz 100 million users stuffing that feed won't scale well me thinks. I don't use it so won't bother me but something to think about

Mrfunkedude,
@Mrfunkedude@mastodon.social avatar

@pixelpusher220 All very interesting points.

iamtheseedman,

@Mrfunkedude My disappointment with mastodon is that I haven't found anybody I know irl.

Mrfunkedude,
@Mrfunkedude@mastodon.social avatar

@iamtheseedman You know people in real life?

Lucky.

@Mrfunkedude There are many lost nerds out there we need to bring home.

phaedral,
@phaedral@mastodon.social avatar

@Mrfunkedude It's gonna be the other way around: Less sharp fedizens will find themselves falling into a Threads trap.

Mrfunkedude,
@Mrfunkedude@mastodon.social avatar

@phaedral I doubt it. I mean, I'm sure some will, (let them) but I think most people when given the choice between being a product or being a user of a service, will pick being a user.
