My new favourite open source mastodon client is https://phanpy.social by @cheeaun.
It is a web app, but can be added to your Home Screen like any other app (even on iPhone).

The attention to detail and minimalist, yet playful, UI is just out of this world. Whenever I use my other client, I wish for their features.

My absolute favourite feature is using different colours to highlight replies, private messages, boosts and hashtags.

m_artigiani,

@janvhs @cheeaun how do you add it to your home screen? 😅

@m_artigiani depending on the platform you're using, here's a reference https://web.dev/learn/pwa/installation 🙇‍♂️

argentum,

@janvhs @cheeaun it’s truly nice! Thanks for the recommendation! I already love it despite this making my eye twitch a little. I’ll stick to light mode for now

@argentum if you're referring to the white status bar after setting to dark mode, you found a bug 🙈. I'll look into this.

@janvhs @cheeaun not sold on the retoots carousel, but I love the way toots are marked as included due to followed hashtags!

tanghus,

@mxk @janvhs @cheeaun The carousel can be disabled in Settings

@tanghus @janvhs @cheeaun yeah, found that already! Definitely giving it a try, especially for the PC.

tanghus,

@mxk @janvhs @cheeaun Ah, for desktop use? It does have some quirks on mobile, especially on older browsers like I use.

@tanghus @janvhs @cheeaun my main thing is, on mobile I want an interface with full screen width columns, but swiping between the columns. That is so in my fingers from the last 15 years on Twitter, this is mandatory. And I honestly prefer native apps over websites on mobile.

@janvhs @cheeaun Elk.zone is similar, and is my primary Mastodon client at this point, but phanpy looks super nice

@sanityinc @janvhs @cheeaun I second Elk. I've been using it since its beginning. It's about as native an experience as I've ever had without it being so.

@janvhs @cheeaun Just playing with it now after reading your post and yes, it’s so beautifully crafted. I’m actually in awe of the fact that it’s not native. And great ethics too (free/open + no data collection).

💕

@aral @cheeaun surprisingly, I don’t mind it not being native that much. Icecubes has great haptic feedback and starting phanpy takes a bit, but with notifications working, it is something that doesn’t matter to me ^^

@janvhs @cheeaun Oh, indeed; I was just noting how smooth it was.

havn,

@janvhs @aral @cheeaun Icecubes isn't the best comparison, though - even though it's native. Through no fault of the developer, SwiftUI doesn't handle the feed of post very well - so Icecubes isn't very smooth. The best showcase would be Ivory, which has excellent feel. Mona and Mammoth has good feel. 🙂

(Still, I love Phanpy and recommend it all the time! This was just a comment on "native". ☺️)
