what role does a label play today, as opposed to an indie streamer or curator? how do we keep pushing musicians to release their work as #creativecommons? should something like a ccmusic.social fedi server exist? any experience with #funkwhale? (I'd like it to evolve into a #Spotify + #bandcamp replacement)

Some #ccmusic labels do this sort of thing. Hypnotic Dirge and Folc Records also immediately come to mind...and some are purely digital.

@wjmaggos @wiloma @blocsonic @edinburgh_man @ryno neither of the two I mentioned are in the fediverse as far as I'm aware. back in the music Manumit days I tried to bridge the ccmusic/open source worlds. @lorenzosmusic has moved that direction but I think people are just burned out on social media in general idk. ive been really disappointed over the years that no young people seem to be stepping up. like I got introduced to #ccmusic in college. where are the new folks in the scene?

it meant more to the early adapters because downloading music was the method then. Now you just click and listen with no download and no fear of piracy backlash.

we still now have some paywalls and ads. and corporate overlords. I feel like #funkwhale might be able to solve this, but we have to find a solution to get artists paid automatically when you play their work. that should be possible.

@wjmaggos @lorenzosmusic @wiloma @blocsonic @edinburgh_man @ryno I'm not optimistic about anything these days, but I wonder if we will see an uptick in interest in remix culture with steamboat Willie going into the public domain.

also, there has been a lot of tears spilled about all the new Marvel characters, but I wonder if some of the dramatic changes had to do with Disney seeing the writing on the wall as far as Public Domain.

I guess I see a lot of possible synergy between the #ccmusic scene and FW. the project would probably either have to be helped or forked but I imagine each #netlabel having a FW instance. but FW would need to at least add the capacity to sell downloads and provide artists something like a Mastodon account. beyond that, a mobile app could work like a decentralized Spotify. and an auto distribute my monthly donation function would be the Holy Grail imo.
