Fun poll for gamedev:

On your dev team, which roles are responsible for building and maintaining animation state machine graphs?

(Please boost if you are interested to know about this.)

@bitinn I marked all options, to elaborate: at big companies like Ubisoft it was mostly gameplay programmers and a bit of technical animators/artists. At Sony a bit of everyone, with strong accent on tech animators. At CD Projekt Red, on Witcher 2 the whole programming team (including engine, tools, gameplay, graphics) was 10 ppl, so almost all were done just by animators.

@bitinn uh... uhm... what if, the game doesn't really have any animations at all that need to be state driven?

@bitinn All the above.

At my previous two jobs it was usually the animator by himself (same guy), but he was also writing his own animation tools so he'd become a tech artist in his own right.

On my most recently released game, there was a tech artist who handled almost all of it, with two of the animators helping occasionally, mostly in trying to learn how to do it themselves. And two programmers would help sometimes.

@bitinn On previous projects it's almost always been dedicated tech artists. In one case the animators tried to do it themselves, would break the entire thing every time, they'd be asked to stop trying to help by the tech artist in charge who'd gut it and fix it over the weekend. Then the next week the producer would tell the animators to keep trying to help.

The tech artist quit shortly afterwards, and then a programmer took over and locked it so animators couldn't touch it.

@bitinn (The producer kept asking the animators to try and help out, and then get confused why the tech artist and subsequently the programmer would start cursing and asking him to stop telling the animators to help.)

Apparently tech designer is also a possible choice, you can put it under the others if you wish so😀
