Did you know that is sort of a secret power tool for projects and todos?

It even has a kanban view.

And clicking any one of those icons on the reminders shown? Opens the project note in . Easy. Simple built in tools.

Apple Reminders > View Menu > as Columns (you can make new columns which show up as sections in list view)

How to easily link to apple notes?

You have two options.

  1. Use Hookmark from @cogsciapps … I have a keyboard shortcut set up to grab the link to anything in either standard or markdown format. Works great with Apple Notes. https://hookproductivity.com

  2. Use the new Apple Notes internal linking feature (I'll demo this here)

Demo of using apple notes internal links (created with command-k) and copying the resulting link to textedit, grabbing the URL from it, and pasting that into a new Apple Reminder.

@ethanschoonover @cogsciapps pretty sure you can use the sharrow from Notes and share to Reminders

ethanschoonover,
@ethanschoonover@mastodon.social avatar

@listrophy @cogsciapps feel free to try it but in my prior testing you can't do this without creating a fully shared note to an email address (so either an existing shared folder or you are forced to add a share to email address to get an icloud link)

@ethanschoonover @cogsciapps you have to switch from “Collaborate” to “Send Copy” and it’ll work.

Source: I worked on this feature 😀

@listrophy @cogsciapps

nice! that worked :) thanks for the feature!

FWIW it's not the first time I've found that collab/make-a-copy drop down a shade unintuitive, though I don't have a specific recommendation on how to improve that. Just noting that even I, a motivated power user, had a hard time with feature discovery in this case.

@ethanschoonover @cogsciapps totally agree, and I should say that I worked on the part after you choose Reminders

ethanschoonover,
@ethanschoonover@mastodon.social avatar

@listrophy @cogsciapps the good part!

@ethanschoonover I can't figure out what to do to make "as Columns" selectable - it's always disabled.

ethanschoonover,
@ethanschoonover@mastodon.social avatar

@tempelorg If you're in a smart list (like Today or other user made smart list) you can't activate column view, only in a "standard" reminders list. Not sure if that's the issue in your case or not.

@ethanschoonover I've been thinking of trying Reminders again as it's slowly become a bit of a powerhouse... any other tips?

ethanschoonover,
@ethanschoonover@mastodon.social avatar

@davidhughes FWIW I use a few Apple Shortcuts that I whipped up with Reminders & Notes.

For example, one takes all the completed reminders from the current day (or previous day if I forgot) and logs them to my "daily logging" note (which is actually a weekly log in my case, broken out into day sections).

This way I have a nice record of everything I've done that week. I sometimes add in other notes or achievements/completions to that note.

@davidhughes I also LIVE in the Today view in Reminders. I aggressively schedule things. I have several lists in Reminders for recurring things. It's how I manage all my chores, household tasks, etc. Furnace filter change is in annuals, etc.

Every day ends with me either checking off, rescheduling, or deleting items (if not necessary to complete) from the Today view till it is empty.

It's a lifesaver and maps to the way my brain works. I suppose for others YMMV

@ethanschoonover very interesting, thanks so much for the detailed replies

@ethanschoonover @patrickfulton pretty wild it even does this. When I stumbled into it I wondered if there are any companies using it for big scale projects. Imagine running a whole company on native, free, Apple software 🤯

@ethanschoonover really wish you could drag things between columns, it’s the biggest miss for me.

ethanschoonover,
@ethanschoonover@mastodon.social avatar

@balshaw I can drag items between the columns very easily... it's my primary mode of using this view

balshaw,
@balshaw@mastodon.social avatar

@ethanschoonover oh! Even on a Mac? I tried for ages the other day and couldn’t get it working

ethanschoonover,
@ethanschoonover@mastodon.social avatar

@balshaw yep, i'm dragging them on a mac

balshaw,
@balshaw@mastodon.social avatar

@ethanschoonover sorted it! User error 😂 thanks

delub,

@ethanschoonover looks great. You always trigger me with these kind of posts 👍

So you manage the projects on a kanban board and not tasks? How do you manage the actions in the projects?

ethanschoonover,
@ethanschoonover@mastodon.social avatar

@delub i keep a list of notes and tasks in the linked Apple Notes doc. Works for me but I think it depends on your project workflow.

chbeer,
@chbeer@mastodon.social avatar

@ethanschoonover Very awesome! Didn't know that! But you have a typo in this toot: you’re talking about Apple Reminders, not Apple Notes (last paragraph)

ethanschoonover,
@ethanschoonover@mastodon.social avatar

@chbeer good catch thanks

@ethanschoonover I’m sure @collin will appreciate that post, too.

@jochenwolters @ethanschoonover it’s a really good app! :)

smartgo,

@ethanschoonover How do you get to that view? (I’m on Sonoma 14.2.1)

ethanschoonover,
@ethanschoonover@mastodon.social avatar

@smartgo Apple Reminders > View Menu > as Columns (you'll have to set up the columns if you don't already have sections from your list view)

smartgo,

@ethanschoonover Excellent, thanks!

jzilske,
@jzilske@mastodon.social avatar

@ethanschoonover @smartgo this seems to be Sonoma only. Finally a compelling reason to upgrade… Thanks!

preslavrachev,
@preslavrachev@mastodon.social avatar

@jzilske @ethanschoonover @smartgo yeah, I think so too. It sucks to have to upgrade the entire OS for such a small (but valuable) app addition. Same with Apple Notes (every time).
