It's sad to see Firefox is about to lose the battle.

@nixCraft No way!! Firefox is it!!

@nixCraft ve Firefoxu chybí překladač..

Octopus1348,

@nixCraft Pre-installs! If desktop Linux takes off, Firefox will also get boosted. But, if it even happens, it will take some time.

@nixCraft people will include FireFox in their browsing Arsenal when their adblocker stops working in Chrome soon

@nixCraft it I'd really telling in this thread how far from the average user most replies are; just the fact that several even don't understand how few people use Firefox outside Linux desktop...

Firefox has lost millions of users every year for the last 20 years and so far has never done any coherent attempts to rectify that. Add to that that in their only stronghold, the Linux desktop, it is being hounded by forking (Waterfox, Pale moon etc).

TotoTunes,

@nixCraft does this contain firefox forks?

vampirdaddy,
@vampirdaddy@chaos.social avatar

@nixCraft
ah, according to statcounter - which is blocked by most Firefox adblocks. This so it is not counting those at all…

3jackdaws,
@3jackdaws@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft Using firefox is a better option to safeguard privacy than Chrome or Safari, people are crazy to use a browser that specialises in stealing private data like Chrome.

rthaar,

@nixCraft indeed 😢

hansvschoot,

@nixCraft these kind of alarming pictures have very little value, other than making the currently biggest party get a larger piece of the pie. (most people don't want to be on the losing team) We all know chrome is dominant, but it is certainly not the case that they have "won" or are the only option.

(the Dutch voting results per city district can show you similar pictures, but the biggest party only has 25% of the seats in parliament)

@nixCraft
"on all platforms"
Safari is default on Apple (Mac & iPhone), Chrome on Android and Microsoft (Edge).

So „Platform“ is heavily skewing the measurement - e.g. Safari probably leads on iPads…

And: how is that measured? And where? Depending on selection fluctuations are wild (Apple App store probably has vast Safari percentage), nerd pages have a large firefox percentage, …

@nixCraft Chrome being the default browser of the huge majority of Android phones, themselves being the vast majority of the phones sold worldwide, it's an quite impossible battle to win.

silentodin,

@nixCraft now that edge is also chromium based it makes things even worse. Unfortunately there are a few things that don’t work as well in Firefox as the do on chrome or Brave

@nixCraft, isn't Google supposed to be banned in China?

@nixCraft That's not what "lose the battle" means, and that whole framing is propaganda for Chrome... 🙄

dalias,
@dalias@hachyderm.io avatar

@nixCraft To elaborate on a couple dimensions:

  1. There is nothing "failure" about a valuable tool used by millions of people to do things of importance to them not being used as much as something else, except in the framing of capitalist brainworms where nobody actually cares about the tool or the people using it, just about extracting monetary value from it. The value of Firefox is independent of the existence of Chrome.
dalias,
@dalias@hachyderm.io avatar

@nixCraft 2. The relevant battle is the battle for web standards and against monoculture actually breaking Firefox or other non-Chrom{e,ium} browsers. Low "market share" does pose a threat in that context, but the right framing is to focus on the threat of Chrome and erosion of web standards, not on anything about Firefox.

dalias,
@dalias@hachyderm.io avatar

@nixCraft 3. If you are interested in market shares, the relevant market is "browsers chosen by people who choose their browser", i.e. excluding everyone who's just using whatever garbage their device shipped with. That would be a much more interesting question, but hard to measure, because people actually deserve privacy and not having you trying to measure their behavior to the benefit of nasty parties who want to exploit knowledge of trends in it.

floatybirb,
@floatybirb@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft I don't really get why chrome is winning since it's not really all that exciting.

WhyNotZoidberg,
@WhyNotZoidberg@topspicy.social avatar

@floatybirb @nixCraft because it's one of the few "major" browsers that are just a browser. Just a window with a web page in it, no clutter like Vivaldi, Opera or Edge.

Believe it or not most people just want that.

omartwotone,
@omartwotone@ioc.exchange avatar

@nixCraft
Safari only used on Greenland? that's curious... 🤔 Firefox lately is only used on linux and like the base of many other forks... 🤷‍♂️

WhyNotZoidberg,
@WhyNotZoidberg@topspicy.social avatar

@omartwotone @nixCraft "Most popular" != Only browser used.
