Went to the GP surgery today for bloods (I have a regular diabetic check-up coming up in two weeks). First sample tube failed to fill, so the phlebotomist tried to draw from the back of my hand and JESUS FUCK apparently it's entirely possible to fill a blood tube from a pain nerve if you use a murder hornet's arse dagger for a needle OUCH (whimper).

Seriously, that was the most painful needle stab I've experienced in a couple of decades, including @Menhit's claws.

Also, yes, I wore a mask. (Other patients didn't bother: nurse offered to put one on although current health authority guidelines don't require it. 😖)

@cstross
In Spain masks are required again in health centres including hospitals.
I have no idea how the numbers currently are.

@cstross To my mind, a healthcare practitioner who isn't wearing a N95 at this point isn't a scientific practitioner of medicine and it calls into question in my mind any advice they might give.

People deserve to be able to access healthcare safely, and that includes safety from other patients who might be carrying airborne communicable diseases and from the practitioner who is in frequent direct contact with ill patients under circumstances which defy what is now known about airborne hygiene.

@cstross I want to be able to consult a doctor/nurse, not a disease vector.

@Infoseepage You're in a country where the government isn't actively trying to gaslight the population that the pandemic is over, aren't you?

@cstross If they're not already wearing a mask, it's sadly rather too late: if they're breathing out the virus, the room will already be full of it

Previous patients are another problem

@cstross @Menhit

I have on occasion offered to do it myself after the 3rd or 4th failed attempt. The standards seem to be variable.

@TonyJWells It's the practice's specialist phlebotomist. I've had her take bloods before and she's normally great. Just … next time I'll remember to offer the other arm.
