I’m delighted to inform you that now that there’s finally enough room on the credit card, AND enough collected in some physical paycheques I still get from gig work, to finally get a new laptop… we’re soon visiting friends in the U.S. for a week and we just found out my wife and daughter aren’t getting all iOS updates any more so they should really get newer phones ASAP.

Working theory that the universe wants me to not have a remotely current or efficient or reliably operating laptop.

@reay or the universe is trying to drive you out of the most expensive walled garden in tech.

@WagesOf I hear that, for sure. I'm no Apple apologist and readily admit they're overpriced for what you're getting (lack of factory memory being an increasingly big issue).

Problem being, I'm wholly anti-Google and don't have time or interest in getting into tweaking coding and need something reliable so basically can't go with Linux (at least for my everyday computer, though I'm happy to try it on the side for kicks), which leaves me with precious few options for computers and phones. 🤷‍♂️

@reay the idea that Apple vs Google vs Microsoft leaves you with Apple seems very suspect.

But you do you I guess.

@WagesOf Indeed. Everyone’s take varies on how much weight they put on different problems each of those options have.

I find it bewildering that people let Google insinuate itself into their lives, and have had more problems with Microsoft computers than literally everyone else I know combined.

Meanwhile, Macs have always been good with me and iPhones are a practical option.

Plenty of people have other experiences and preferences. I assume they make choices accordingly. 🤷‍♂️

@reay apple collects just as much. My stance is they all fail but one is far more expensive. 🤷

@WagesOf Type of data collected, probably. Volume, I doubt. Google for sure has farther and deeper reach. But even if true, Apple’s business model doesn’t rely on the selling of access to that data to anyone who wants to pay for it.

If we accept, as we currently must, that both companies collect a crazy amount of highly sensitive and intrusive data about its users, I will always favour the company that doesn’t then sell it to others as a matter of course. Lesser of two evils, IMHO.
