I genuinely hope everyone who gets a Vision Pro loves it. I hope my initial misgivings about it are wrong and that a use case presents itself immediately. But I dunno man. It’s like I said the other week: this is a dev kit that is being positioned as a consumer gadget and I just haven’t been “sold” yet.

I love nothing more than to spend money on useless shit, but I need to be sold. And so far, I haven’t been sold.

It looks super cool. The idea of essentially watching any video, film or TV show in what is pretty much a larger vision field than IMAX sells me, even if it weren’t for all the other cool computer/iPad/camera etc. stuff it does.

Years ago, Sony tried this same thing with TV and I tried it out. It sucked, in no way did the image live up to the hype.

This has the kind of resolution to fix that issue and deliver incredible colors and image over your entire viewing field if so desired

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@RodneyPetersonTalent for sure but with two hour battery life, I’m still essentially tethered to an outlet or an extra battery pack. And I’m not sure I’ll want to wear a headset for hours on end. This is why I personally need to try it first.

@film_girl

Yeah definitely. And you’ll be able to do it in a few months when the hype dies down and they’re trying to sell more units.

You can use it while the battery is charging for epics like Oppenheimer, Titanic, Killers of the Flower Moon, binge watching TV, etc.

I don’t see the price on this product ever coming down. Future generations will add better stability and more features but this is not the iPhone with discounted basic models.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@RodneyPetersonTalent price isn’t my issue, to be clear. It’s about will I use it or will it sit on a shelf.

@film_girl

That’s just for people who think it’ll get cheaper. It won’t, they’ll be knockoffs like 4K and HDTV - early models were quite expensive for both - but this is going to have a ton of patented technology not easily duplicated at the quality of the original developer.

@film_girl @exchgr Honestly I'm struggling to imagine myself buying it at $399 and half the weight. At $3500? Pull the other one.

Then again the v1 apple watch was a horrific misfire too, including the memory-holed $15k "Edition" model. And now I'm married to mine. Hard to predict the future.

exchgr,
@exchgr@mastodon.world avatar

@memory @film_girl yep. i also skipped and ridiculed the first few apple watches, because apple hadn’t yet developed its killer features. i think vision pro isn’t there, and it remains to be seen whether it’ll get there

biggsjm,
@biggsjm@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl Perfect take. When I saw the Vision Pro ad I thought, oh yeah like the iPhone ad, except that the iPhone was both a phone and a portable internet device, both of which were compelling in their own right. This device is $4,000 and the way that ad ends is by showing you a Home Screen full? of apps (which includes an area for "compatible apps"). Hard pass.

@film_girl For me, I’d love to buy one one day; but at this price point, I don’t want to do it twice. So I’ll probably wait until gen 2 or gen 3 to get a mature product, not looking to be an early adopter on this. Something something disposable income…

@film_girl Vision Pro feels kind of like the watch to me in that it needs to find its purpose (if any) in the world by having people use it.

It's priced high enough that you need to seriously have a good need or desire for it to buy it, and it's totally okay to sit and watch for a minute, even as a tech enthusiast!

I'm a weirdo in that I'm bearish on Vision Pro's prospects in general, yet I preordered anyway bc i want that virtual Mac display.

Of course, I also bought a 2019 Mac Pro, so 🤷😆

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@harpaa01 oh I’m so sorry you have the 2019 Mac Pro but I hope you’ve had good use out of it. I’d almost get this just as a display too but again, not enough info on how well it’ll work as a display. Idk. I look forward to actual reviews.

@film_girl I love my 2019 Mac Pro so much though! It's such a beautiful piece of Apple gear that I'll treasure forever and my only sadness is that there isn't a proper Apple Silicon successor that can be expanded in all the same dimensions (maybe they'll get there eventually).

I hope the display feature is good enough for doing work on. 🤞

@film_girl Sorry, aren't you the person who got talked into the Meta RayBans by @MikeElgan just a little bit ago - to the point of hovering over the "buy" button - simply because they were RayBans and Mike said they were cool on . (asking for a podcast listenership)... 😉

How I read this is that Mike needs to be given a Apple Vision Pro Press pack to take to Oaxaca, so he can tell you how good they are at taking spacial movies of breakfast (and his wife walking through a lilac field). 😂

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@jann @MikeElgan see, but I was sold on that! I saw the value! This is my whole point — I haven’t been sold yet! And since I’ll literally buy anything, I think that’s a huge problem.

jann,
@jann@twit.social avatar

@film_girl @MikeElgan I think you were just sold on adding another set of RayBans to your collection, Christina! 😂 ::jk::

mikebrew,
@mikebrew@mastodon.social avatar

@jann @film_girl @MikeElgan I don’t see anyone other way someone could’ve been sold on that product. That must be it.

jann,
@jann@twit.social avatar

@mikebrew @film_girl @MikeElgan well, I'm not gonna go THAT far. If she has the money (she does) and she doesn't care about the privacy of it (she doesn't), then go ahead. Have fun! At least they're RayBans! 😂

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@jann @mikebrew @MikeElgan honestly the Ray-Bans are the whole appeal. The camera stuff is just a bonus.

garretble,
@garretble@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl Apple themselves hasn’t even seemed to promote it as though they want it to exist.

I mean, I’m not on twitter anymore and never had instagram and don’t watch broadcast TV…but how is someone even supposed to know this exists unless they read tech blogs or watch Apple keynotes?
