Going through an elderly relatives possessions. Behold the box of floppies. @foone is this something that some hobbyist could make use of?

@foone as noted else-thread I doubt there’s any interesting software on them but if spares are handy I’d be glad to ship them to any person or org who could make use of them.

🤔 All this talk of could Caitlin Clark play in the NBA (no) or the BIG3 (maybe), but no talk of could Dawn Staley coach in the NBA (yes), or the BIG3 (yes). 🤷🏿‍♂️

@mekkaokereke actually I’m curious— why do you think she couldn’t? (My gut instinct is that her height would make her too easy to guard but basketball is not my sport so I’m probably just blathering.)

🤔"Unions are better than DEI!" is a very confused statement. Because unions and DEI address completely different problems.

One important thing that effective DEI does, is address anti-Black racism. It makes the workplace tolerable for your Black coworkers (if you have any).

Most public school teachers in the US are in a union. And yet, Black teachers and Black students experience massive amounts of racism from those teachers. Because unions aren't a magical answer for anti-Black racism.

memory,
@memory@blank.org avatar

@mekkaokereke Dear god. I'm all for labor unions but among their other properties they're a tool that gets used to decide who gets to work and anyone who thinks that wouldn't sometimes be applied in a racist manner in this country shouldn't be allowed to carry sharp objects unattended. Like just on first principles, never mind doing a tiny bit of research into their history.

So now having had one or two things I’ve posted go moderately viral (well, by fediverse standards) it seems like the ratio of reposts to people I need to block for being ridiculous neurotic pedants is about 200:1. It’s not a bad number in absolute terms but my god does it augur poorly for the experience here if masto actually grows much more.

If they get Voyager 1 working again, this will go down in history as the absolute pinnacle of the art of debugging. You think your codebase and kubernetes cluster is hard to deal with? Motherfucker try doing this with a delay of light-hours.

If there’s an award for this it should be in the shape of Margaret Hamilton standing next to a pile of printouts taller than her. https://fosstodon.org/@AkaSci/112091847867604195

Back on the after a week riding the Paris metro and I want every last person with decision-making power at the MTA to have the words THREE MINUTE HEADWAYS tattooed on the inside of their eyelids. Every decision should be made on the grounds of whether it gets us closer to that goal.

Anyone who utters the phrase “one seat ride” should be summarily fired. I cannot emphasize how much that does not matter if you can rely on the next train getting there quickly.

Are there therapists who specialize in helping children who are stressed out giving tech support to their parents?

My mom is a mathematician. She can program w/ punch cards. But, she & Dad just don't keep up with tech anymore. Drives me nuts.

Gave my dad an iPhone for Christmas. They HATE it. Probably would hate any phone. Now they say it's recording their conversations.🙄

Dad holds down the buttons on the side when he picks it up. Activates the voice assistant... they think it's a hacker.

@futurebird oof, and in fact I just noticed that the link to the project page from the hackaday article is 404. Possibly not a good sign. Hope you get yours.

As the baby boom generation ages, I think it says nothing good about us that we’ve focused all of our efforts as a society on ever-changing multifunctional devices that impose a massive time tax just to keep up with. “Do one thing, do it well” and do it consistently is a hugely underrated approach.

@futurebird do the GAs even “patrol” any more? I think the last time I saw them on the subway was well over fifteen years ago now. They were always a hugely problematic organization but I feel like at this point they’ve dwindled down to being just straightforwardly Sliwa’s personal gang of thugs/bodyguards/enforcers.

Valuable lessons were learned, but not the ones that the mother thought would be learned.🤷🏿‍♂️

  • She learned that millions of Black people haven't been "making it all up" about police mistreatment
  • She learned why US Black folk almost never call the police, for any reason
  • Her son learned that his own mom is not safe. Her lack of understanding of US racism makes her dangerous
  • She's probably going to learn that this does not meet the definition of police misconduct

@jshirley @mekkaokereke my own not-remotely-black (but hey, Mekka boosted it) opinion: …the fuck? Of course you call the ambulance when someone full on wrecks their car. Concussions are nothing to play with and subdural hematomas can and will kill you stone dead in minutes even as you’re insisting you feel fine.

If you think the crash victim is likely to get a hard ride, absolutely stay there and try to keep the cops honest, but you need paramedics involved ASAP and there’s only one 911.

That We Are The World doc is ok but as a keen observer of all the African charitable songs that's like the one I'm least interested in.

If I had the money power and time I'd love to make a documentary about the various countries who did their own charity singles. France had the worst I think, or maybe Australia. Canada had "Tears Are Not Enough" except instead of being headed by Quincy Jones it was David Fucking Foster haha. And then Quebec was like "Don't forget about us" Germany had the best

@Robotron let’s not forget “Hear’N’Aid”, the Heavy Metal We Are the World, brought to us by Ronnie James Dio, Vince Neil and Rob Halford.

One of the most amusing, yet legitimately vexing issues with Apple Vision Pro is opening an app, not seeing anything, and then realizing it's behind me (where I left it). "Let's see now, where did I leave that screen..."

My hot take on the Vision Pro is the same as my hot take on every AR/VR/Mixed Reality headset produced in the past checks notes 20 years: "If most women can't use your product for 4 hours straight without throwing up, don't try to tell me that it's the future of anything." I said what I said.

Women can use a smartphone indefinitely without nausea. They can use a laptop indefinitely. A gaming console and TV indefinitely. But XR headsets cause motion sickness in most women in under an hour. 🤷🏿‍♂️

memory,
@memory@blank.org avatar

@mekkaokereke huh, I didn’t realize the VR motion sickness effect was gender-biased. TIL!

There’s a version of this product that’s going to set the world on fire, but it weighs under 10oz and is painting directly onto your retinas. I don’t think any of us are going to live to see it: there are some brutally hard materials science problems in the way.

    I see Apple will now do a Browser Choice-like UI for EU iOS devices. I understand the goal of fairness, but this will work just as well in 2024 as it did for Windows 7 in 2010. People do not choose products this way. “Oh, there’s lots of choices! I’ll pick this one.”

    memory,
    @memory@blank.org avatar

    @chucker I’m also not convinced that increasing chromium’s market share (the inevitable outcome of this action) is going to succeed as an anti-monopolistic intervention?

    memory,
    @memory@blank.org avatar

    @chucker yeah, at this point mobile Safari is the only remaining bulwark against a Chromium monoculture. I think the EU is playing with fire.

    I genuinely hope everyone who gets a Vision Pro loves it. I hope my initial misgivings about it are wrong and that a use case presents itself immediately. But I dunno man. It’s like I said the other week: this is a dev kit that is being positioned as a consumer gadget and I just haven’t been “sold” yet.

    I love nothing more than to spend money on useless shit, but I need to be sold. And so far, I haven’t been sold.

    memory,

    @film_girl @exchgr Honestly I'm struggling to imagine myself buying it at $399 and half the weight. At $3500? Pull the other one.

    Then again the v1 apple watch was a horrific misfire too, including the memory-holed $15k "Edition" model. And now I'm married to mine. Hard to predict the future.

    If 56% of NFL players are Black and 1.6% are Asian or Pacific Islander, what percentage of playoff quarterbacks would you expect to be Black or AAPI?

    Ravens: Black
    Texans: Black
    Browns: Black
    KC: Black
    GB: Black
    Cowboys: Black
    Eagles: Black
    Miami: AAPI
    Rams: White
    Bills: White
    Buccaneers: White
    Steelers: White
    49ers: White

    The NFL is not known for its progressive stance on diversity. But once one person breaks ranks and lets Black guys play QB? Everyone else has to do it too, just to compete.👍🏿
