The best EV for anyone living in a city is an electric bicycle, IMHO and experience. A comfy and practical one. Not some pseudo sporty stuff. With big bags. So you can do your shopping, go out for a picknick in the park, to the lake or whatever. You don't need a car for everything. This is my daily ride. And at a bit below 900€ quite affordable, IMHO.

bkbkbk,

@jwildeboer @notjustbikes I want to try this so badly in my area (Bay Area, CA), but I’m so afraid of theft and vandalism. Is there an option that comes with a big metal and glass cage that fits around it?

korin,

@jwildeboer absolutely right. bikes are also incredibly cheap to maintain and run if electric, especially so compared to a car. sadly i'm living in north american suburbs where riding a bike is unviable and quite dangeorus thanks to car-centric planning, but i'd still love to own an e-bike

@jwildeboer Looks cool, but I shared it with a few people and think we generated enough traffic to crash the DB..
    Or maybe a cosmic coincidence

@jwildeboer I'd do you one even better: you probably don't need an electric bike. Most people (at least in the Netherlands) bike distances with it that are perfectly doable with a normal bike, which is better for your health and due to not needing a battery better for the environment as well.
Use an e-bike as a car replacement, not as a bike replacement.

    @CyclesSmiles@mastodon.social avatar

@jwildeboer for that price I have 2 bicycles in my shed: 1 citybike/normal bike, second hand ( city- duh!). With big bags, indeed!
And a ( second hand) recumbent to take me everywhere in 25 km radius in stead of car. With a small bag, that I can take off and take with me.

Now, don't let my other 5 bikes hear about this, or they will get jealous.

    faequeenapril,

    @jwildeboer

I agree, but there is some merit in the more sporty ones, I live in a very hilly city and there's no way you're getting up the hills on a step through bike and the sporty ones tend to have the gearing for hills which sucks because if I ever got an ebike I would want a step through framed one.

    jgordon,

@jwildeboer The problem (MSP, Twin Cities) here is bike theft. It’s insane. Do utility eBikes now have keys and remote disabling devices?

Need something like stolen iPhone management.

    jgordon,

@jwildeboer Or maybe thieves dislike utility bikes?

  • jgordon,

@jwildeboer Here the compact LiOn angle grinders have rendered locks largely obsolete, police are loathe to pursue AirTags and self-recovery is potentially lethal. Flowers help though.

@jwildeboer Do you have some other names I can search for? That brand is only coming up with euro vendors and I've struggled with an image search.

    pyne,

@jwildeboer Don’t forget if you already have a bike and are happy with it, you can convert it to electric. It’s super cool!

    strwbrryJen,

@jwildeboer im using an olde school bike in one of the American cities where you can do that and it is SO much better

@jwildeboer I wish I had the facilities to keep one like that. I have to keep my bike in my flat and have to lift it to get it in and out, so had to have one that's not too heavy. There's too much bike theft around here to keep it outside. We need more secure bike parking for homes with no garage.

    anthonii,

@jwildeboer That's probably the most interesting E-Bike I've seen so far. Usually they have that big bar in the frame.

For those who asked: F.lli Schiano E-Ville 28 https://amzn.eu/d/5N0ReKf It’s a Chinese e-bike that is on offer branded by several companies. I got the Schiano version.

And yes, I have hidden an AirTag somewhere not easy to get to. Registered the bike with the police. Added a halfway decent lock with a chain and "beautified" it with the flowers and plastic box to make it unattractive due to its individual look. The big bags also hide the battery and as it has the motor in the front wheel, it's not really immediately recognisable as an e-bike. So far it has worked — the bike ist still with me and not with thieves :)

    gothnbass,

@jwildeboer Camouflage really is one of the best defenses against theft :)

    ash,

@jwildeboer Bless you! 🚲🕊️ Thank you; I've been so happy with mastodon since i joined <1wk ago .. mainly because of posts like this! I'd like to buy an electric bike soon as I'm in a cycling-friendly environment now. Super; danke !

@kkarhan @notjustbikes

    jeff,

@jwildeboer Inwosh more places in the US were bike friendly. Our infrastructure really isn’t set up for these on most places.

@jwildeboer thank you. That's the the one I found. It's a very good price. At least something to consider even though I still have some hope for a work e-bike.
But regardless eventually I want an e-bike.
We don't have a car and we don't plan on getting but better bikes ia definitely a good option
