After 30+ years in tech (Unix, Linux, IT Security), my time in tech might be over. It took me 2.5 years to finally get hired for the job that I just lost yesterday. Not sure I want to go through that again. That was rougher than rough and just about ended me.

cmccullough,
@cmccullough@vivaldi.net avatar

@mike You know, I'm not even sure. Tech is all I've ever known. Now, at 57, it's going to be tough finding new work, I think.

cmccullough,
@cmccullough@vivaldi.net avatar

@mike Yeah, same here. I have no clue what career path I could or should take. I really do love tech. Well, the Security, privacy, and Linux side, anyway. At my age, I'm thinking it might be too late to choose a different path.

It's starting to look like I will no longer be employed over the next couple of weeks. I would love to find something in WordPress, Linux, Open Source, Security, etc. Junior roles are okay. Like I mentioned a week or two back, I just want to get back into some work that makes me happy. My current role is stressful, pays terribly, and with the possibility of losing it over the next couple of weeks, my anxiety is going through the roof. Thanks for any help you give. ❤️

Joe Lieberman

Lobbyist for Chinese telecom giant ZTE
Man responsible for killing the Obamacare public option
Democrat who voted for McCain and helped Trump via 3rd parties saying “people want something different”
And Betsy DeVos simp

Has died.

@flexghost Yes, the man caused lots of problems and was absolutely worthless. But can we stop blaming Hilary's loss on third parties? Christ, there are lots of problems within the Democratic Party. I don't know, maybe it's time to fix the problems in the Party instead of blaming third parties for all of the DNC's failings? It's really getting old.

@flexghost You said, “helped Trump via third parties.” It’s pretty clear what you’re talking about.

Okay, this getting frustrating. I'm on the Vivaldi Social instance but when I use the instance in the Vivaldi browser, if the instance sits idle for a few hours, it locks up and then crashes the browser. It can stay idle all day in Firefox and works fine when I come back to it. And again, like a few times in the past, I can no longer see Vivaldi (or tag them) here on Mastodon. I can see others on the instance just fine. I can't even reach out to them about the issue. This is why I've tried other instances in the past but moving to a new instance just pisses people off. Trust me, I've receive a few unpleasant messages about the move and then requesting a new follow.

cmccullough,
@cmccullough@vivaldi.net avatar

@mike @Vivaldi Thanks for tagging them, Mike. I use Vivaldi and don't experience issues with anything else. The Mastodon instance has been acting like this since day one for me. I really have no idea what could be causing it. It will do this on my desktop and laptop. I can always tell when the whole thing is about to crash, too. I simply click on something in Mastodon and nothing happens. I know that a few second later, it's all over for the browser and I have to restart it.

cmccullough,
@cmccullough@vivaldi.net avatar

@mike @Vivaldi Thanks, again, Mike, for tagging them for me. I appreciate the help.

cmccullough,
@cmccullough@vivaldi.net avatar

@mike @Vivaldi Actually, wish I had a separate Mastodon account to run in Vivaldi for a while to see how it acts. I'm not sure if it's a Vivaldi instance issue or Mastodon, in general, issue.

cmccullough,
@cmccullough@vivaldi.net avatar

@Vivaldi Thanks! I actually clear cookies and cache each day.

When I tag you, I usually use @Vivaldi. Doing this didn't even find you again.

This is all very strange. I have no idea what is going on.

I'm looking for recommendations for cloud file storage. I really want to set up my own server here at home but just can't afford the hardware right now. I've been using the free service from Dropbox and while I've enjoyed the service, I just can't afford to upgrade. Any recommendations for a privacy-respecting, affordable storage service? I was really interested in @ente after hearing about them on @DestinationLinux but I think they are only photo storage. I really like that they are completely Open Source, end-to-end encrypted, and privacy-respecting, though.

I'm reading an article on @omgubuntu about a new app that the folks at @linuxmint are building and then, like an idiot, I decided to read the comments. 99% of the articles are shitheads shitting all over Linux Mint and its users. People in the FOSS world can be arrogant fucking jerks!

cmccullough,
@cmccullough@vivaldi.net avatar

@sesivany @omgubuntu @linuxmint I run FF and was able to see it. I need to update my privacy protection. I need to stay out of the comment sections. 😀

So, I'm an LTS Linux kind of guy. You know, Ubuntu LTS, openSUSE Leap, Debian, etc., but I've been wanting to give @kde Plasma 6 a try. I was experiencing too many issues on openSUSE Tumbleweed so I decided to give KDE Neon a try. Using Neon just reinforces my love for LTS Linux distributions. Absolutely NOTHING wrong with Neon but the bleeding edge is a bit too much for me.

@maxamillion I do really like the Fedora Xfce spin. 👍

I have nothing against bicycles, but some of the most arrogant people I know are bicycle proponents. Who just don't seem to understand that not everyone can safely ride one. YA' KNOW?

cmccullough,
@cmccullough@vivaldi.net avatar

@lauren Bikes or motorcycles?

cmccullough,
@cmccullough@vivaldi.net avatar

@lauren @PJ_Evans Bikes are legally essential, as well. I get around by bike and public transport. To think that bikes aren't as important as cars and motorcycles is pretty elitist and entitled. Cars have completely ruined our towns and cities here in the US.

Just listened to yet another great episode of Linux Dev Time (episode 93) from @LateNightLinux where they talked about the interview process for development positions. As a very nearly 57 year old that has been in IT for 35 years and has worked with Linux for 30 years, I was thinking about working on my development skills and then trying to move into a development job. I have to be honest, after listening to this latest episode, I've decided against doing this. The interview process sounds horrifying and my age surely won't help.

Vivaldi Social OGs! 📢

We know you were glad when we increased the character limit here, but did you secretly wish for a bigger editor box for your long posts? 😏

Well, we're granting you your wish. ✨

To change the height of the editor:

  1. Place the mouse cursor at the bottom right corner of the text field (just above the character limit).
  2. Click and drag the mouse up or down.

Voilà!

Video showing how to change the height of the editor box in Vivaldi Social.

Does anyone have any "inside information" on when @opensuse Tumbleweed or @fedora might have Plasma 6 available? Sorry, I'm really itchin' to give it a try.

Vibes against Automattic are brutal tonight. Like, they really screwed up twice in a week.

WordPress is too important to be put at such serious risk.

cmccullough,
@cmccullough@vivaldi.net avatar

@ernie Yeah, this is a mess. I think this is going to hit Wordpress.com harder than .org but you never know.

cmccullough,
@cmccullough@vivaldi.net avatar

@ernie Something that does worry me, though, is that there are a lot of people who don't know the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org. This might hurt .org a bit, as well.

Ugh! My Vivaldi instance has been crashing all day and now I'm unable to tag Vivaldi about the issue. Any other Vivaldi instance users out there experiencing any issues? Can you actually tag Vivaldi?

cmccullough,
@cmccullough@vivaldi.net avatar

@epp @tim_lavoie @Vivaldi Other than the Vivaldi instance crashing every 10 minutes or so, and being unable to tag Vivaldi or find them in a search, the browser seems to be working fine.
