Pretty much all the Apple hardware seems to come with a default of 8GB of RAM.

What do you Mac users do when you need to open a third browser tab?! 🤔

das_aug,

@fribbledom
Just to add data points to the noise here: Intel laptop, Arch Linux, 4GB RAM. No problems with Browser tabs, frankly.

Is it possible that your browser just grabs this much memory because it is available? And it doesn't actually need it?

gryzor,
@gryzor@androiddev.social avatar

@fribbledom macOS users tend to show off "I have 200 tabs with 8GB ram", and it's true; what is also true is that ARM Macs have very fast I/O, so all that "very efficient memory management" macOS users enjoy and talk about, is actually "a lot of very efficient and curated paging to the very fast NVME drive" :) (I'm "forced" to use an M1 mac @ work and I notice this every single day).

@ezekiel@hachyderm.io avatar

@fribbledom I used an 8GB MBA for about a year and a half and except for Xcode and some video games ram wasn’t really a problem

manuelcaeiro,
@manuelcaeiro@mastodon.social avatar

@fribbledom
It seems a great opportunity to install Solus. 😉

P.S.: Just joking. I presume you need a mac for testing.

fribbledom,
@fribbledom@mastodon.social avatar

@manuelcaeiro That's indeed the case 🙂

dubiousdisc,

@fribbledom Hmm, just to add to the pile of data points:

I'm using Arc browser here (Chromium-based, packaged in a Swift shell). While the definition of "open tabs" is rather fuzzy in Arc, I'm sitting at 460 MB right now with about 5 active tabs open and 10 more cached for instant access.

Makes me wonder what Chrome really adds on top of the engine to be so clunky.

maarteuh,
@maarteuh@mastodon.workingweb.nl avatar

@fribbledom I know this isn't all serious but the Apple arm architecture is very efficient

fribbledom,
@fribbledom@mastodon.social avatar

@maarteuh

Actually, I kinda am. Of course it's not gonna be a problem with the third tab, but I can't remember the last time my browser needed less than 8GB of memory on its own. Apple Silicon may be efficient, but that's not gonna help with memory consumption.

maarteuh,
@maarteuh@mastodon.workingweb.nl avatar

@fribbledom haven't had issues on my MacBook air m1 with 8 gigs. And I do web development on it

TrechNex,

@fribbledom the trick is to not use Chrome.

reinderdijkhuis,

@fribbledom It's literally never been a problem. (Laptop is a 2015 MacBook Pro with 16GB but my desktop did come with 8 GB and ran on that for 6 years before I upgraded the RAM). 12 tabs open in Safari RN including this one and 3 DeviantArt tabs, plus I've got Firefox and Signal running.

scops,
@scops@social.tchncs.de avatar

@fribbledom normaly that isn't a problem :) but i'm with you; it should be 16GB as default...

DiabolusAlbus,

@fribbledom Well, I only ever experienced limitations when I tried to open the 501st tab in safari on my mobile apple devices (iPhone & iPad with less than 8GB of RAM). On my old macbook (with 16 GB of RAM) I didn’t encounter any limitations yet. So, I guess one needs to use chrome or so to come across the limitations you seem to image exist.
In conclusion, upon opening a third browser tab, we wonder how you came up thinking this could be a problem, while opening hundreds of more browser tabs.🤷‍♂️

proji,

@fribbledom I’ve never had a problem opening multiple tabs on my 2015 MBP with 8GB RAM. I’m not saying that more RAM is unnecessary, just that macOS is very optimised. Also this is being typed on my iPad Air M1 that has 8GB RAM too. This thing is absurdly fast

joe,

@fribbledom what's the deal with browsers? I mean you open a tab, and it uses RAM!? canned laughter

JulieSqveakaroo,

@fribbledom

... use a paper punch to trick the machine to allow storage on both sides of the floppy, and flip the disc over?

shauny,

@fribbledom RAM just works differently on Apple Silicon Macs. I’ve never had an issue, any slowdown, or any beachballs when using any of my M1 or M2 Macs

lx,

@fribbledom What would you need a third browser tab for? One for Facebook and one for TikTok is enough?

alexcoder04,

@fribbledom maybe they download more free RAM from the internet 🤔

FSMaxB,

@fribbledom It's actually pretty impressive what they have achieved. The system stays way more responsive than it has any right to when it runs out of memory. I don't exactly know what they are doing, but I think it's kind of something like zswap + regular swapping but with measures in place to not swap out parts of the UI (which they can do because they own the entire stack). It's not like Linux where it gets unusable for seconds or minutes the moment it starts swapping.

mattsledge,
@mattsledge@mastodon.social avatar

@fribbledom You're joking, but I have been using an 8GB Mac Mini M1 since day one with no spinning beach ball or slowdowns whatsoever.

fribbledom,
@fribbledom@mastodon.social avatar

@mattsledge

I'm not sure I really am. It's been a while I've seen my browser use less than 8GB of memory.

unCoopervised,

@fribbledom @mattsledge 1. What browser are you using? 2. Have you ever used an M1 or M2 Mac? 😁

fribbledom,
@fribbledom@mastodon.social avatar

@unCoopervised @mattsledge

Typically Firefox. Apple Silicon is neat, no doubt, but it doesn't magically reduce memory usage.

mdhughes,

@fribbledom
% safariCountTabs.applescript
Window = 15 tabs - Window = 77 tabs - Window = 22 tabs -

Uses… hard to tell exactly but main Safari is 1GB, tabs add up to maybe 4GB wired? I have a 16GB machine.

Other browsers are absolute shit. I don't understand why people use Chrome, even aside from the spyware.

natharari,

@fribbledom I don't know...mine has 32GB and it's more than enough for incredible amounts of operations. Also I have about 200+ tabs open in Safari under something like 20 groups and there's literally no slowdown. If I have to relaunch it, it takes about 1 or 2 seconds. It hasn't been an issue for years and years for me.

Also I get the same kind of response on my iPhone and iPad Pro.

@fribbledom iPad sidecar

midzer,
@midzer@chaos.social avatar

@fribbledom When I check my browser task manager most sites do no use more than 100MB each. Dunno where your high memory consumption is coming from. Extensions maybe?

fribbledom,
@fribbledom@mastodon.social avatar

@midzer

Pretty much uBlock only here. My Grafana tabs alone amount to ~8GB of memory usage. Probably as much their fault as it is the browser's.

midzer,
@midzer@chaos.social avatar

@fribbledom I don't know Grafanas WebUI, but it looks like it's a huge memory hog. My heaviest tab is NextCloud with ~120MB.

ricard,
@ricard@ricard.social avatar

@fribbledom I miss the good old days when you could just add extra RAM yourself without having to pay for Apple's high RAM price.

drfrededison,
@drfrededison@livellosegreto.it avatar

@fribbledom we uninstall chrome and use Firefox (or any other browser made by actual humans)

fribbledom,
@fribbledom@mastodon.social avatar

@drfrededison

Here's me with my Firefox currently using 17GB of memory.

drfrededison,
@drfrededison@livellosegreto.it avatar

@fribbledom sorry, I forgot, we uninstall windows and install any Linux distro if the browser is using this much ram with only five tabs open

fribbledom,
@fribbledom@mastodon.social avatar

@drfrededison

Oh. Didn't realize Arch is running a Windows kernel.

drfrededison,
@drfrededison@livellosegreto.it avatar

@fribbledom Jokes aside, never EVER had any problem on my intel macs on running multiple apps. Everything is very optimized. And that's the only things keeping me on a Mac after 2015...

Here's a screenshot, so that thee shall believe.
