It’s unacceptable IMO that tvOS apparently doesn’t allows apps to use persistent storage. For instance, the new RetroArch game emulator has to store all your savegames, screenshots, ROMs in the Caches directory, which the OS may purge at any time without warning. poof

“your app can only access 500 KB of persistent storage … Outside of this limited local storage, all other data must be purgeable by the OS when space is low.” https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/documentation/General/Conceptual/AppleTV_PG/index.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40015241-CH12-SW1 Why even sell the 128 GB Apple TV then?

ezekiel,
@ezekiel@hachyderm.io avatar

@rileytestut @ole this was a big part of the problem with Minecraft for Apple TV. They didn’t discontinue it because they got bored, people kept losing data and they couldn’t fix it.

There's a lot to Apple's DMA response and even more misinformation and FUD floating around about it.

I spent a couple of days reading everything from the press release, to the developer documentation, and the DMA and talking to Apple and have put it all into plain English on @macstories: https://www.macstories.net/stories/understanding-apples-response-to-the-dma/

ezekiel,
@ezekiel@hachyderm.io avatar

@Migueldeicaza @stroughtonsmith @BenRiceM @johnvoorhees @macstories The new terms cannot be reversed right? Once a Developer account agrees to them it's final? What happens if a browser wants to change their business model and becomes super popular.

If it was really a choice, they would let people switch back and forth but they don't.

ezekiel,
@ezekiel@hachyderm.io avatar

@Migueldeicaza @stroughtonsmith @BenRiceM @johnvoorhees @macstories It's by account, not by app - and the addendum with the CTF cannot be revoked on it's own. You also can't transfer apps from accounts under the new terms to accounts under the old terms. There's no way to back it out without setting up a new developer account and app bundle.

ezekiel,
@ezekiel@hachyderm.io avatar

@Migueldeicaza @stroughtonsmith @BenRiceM @johnvoorhees @macstories All this combined again illustrates that this is a malicious policy. If they wanted freemium/free apps to stick on the old terms they wouldn't make it so hard to switch back and forth.

Or, they would just explicitly allow completely free apps with no in-app transactions to stay completely free.

@CARROT the widget CONSISTENTLY has a dramatic drop for the 2nd hour that doesn’t appear in the app. Any way to fix this?

@CARROT yea I see that now, explains the discrepancy - although I still don’t really get why the 1 hour out is always so much different than the current hour

OK but how do I tell iOS 17 to not prompt me to start a check in with my emergency contact every time I leave the house? Because omfg. The feature doesn’t appear anywhere in settings so can’t be turned off

ezekiel,
@ezekiel@hachyderm.io avatar

@stroughtonsmith it’s never done that for me-I have emergency contacts etc all set up and have used check in too

How is it notifying you?

ezekiel,

@stroughtonsmith I’ve got these settings off which might suppress it

Here's my overview of everything that's new (primarily in Music and Messages) besides the Journal app, which we'll cover separately.

Wow. Talking about license plate registration stickers has actually caused me to stick up for one of those typically 'murican values.

Do we really need a differently-colored sticker every year to signal the car is properly registered in this day and age of enforcement cameras with OCR hooked up to central databases? Strictly speaking, no.

But it's a nice alternative to that sort of surveillance tech being everywhere which I'd rather not normalize.

ezekiel,
@ezekiel@hachyderm.io avatar

@TechConnectify It's not like this will be a reason they chose not to get that technology where they don't have it, and in many areas they already have it but still make us use the stickers?

I have a Swift style question for you all. We can omit the return keyword in:

  1. Single-expression closures, e.g. people.filter { $0.age >= 18 }
  2. Single-expression functions (https://www.hackingwithswift.com/swift/5.1/implicit-returns)
  3. If/switch expressions (https://www.hackingwithswift.com/swift/5.9/if-switch-expressions)

Which do you use? (You can select more than one if you're using Mastodon on the web – does NOT work in Ivory!)

ezekiel,
@ezekiel@hachyderm.io avatar

@twostraws can’t select more than one I. @ivory

Hmm. Apple will give me $1300 for my 2-year old $4000 laptop. I’m tempted? I would sell for $1500 or $1600 to anyone out there who wants a 14” M1 Max with 64GB of RAM and 10/32 core and Apple Care+

ezekiel,
@ezekiel@hachyderm.io avatar

@film_girl Storage space?

ezekiel,
@ezekiel@hachyderm.io avatar

@film_girl Higher and I'd take it…but unfortunately the 64GB of ram is way overdoing it for me, somebody else should get that one…My 500GB SSD is overfull and I'd like to go higher than 1TB for my next machine…

I have really come to appreciate selling direct (eBay/Local/Family) for the Apple recycling price (or a little higher, in your case). I've been doing that with my phones/laptops for a couple years and it gives the recipients a great deal while still being the same amount for me.

M3 4/4
M3 Pro 6/6
M3 Max 12/4

So I guess M3 Pro is a downgrade/sidegrade from the M2 Pro. Max is a nice upgrade from the old stuff.

As someone who doesn't care about GPU performance I'm slightly annoyed at having to spend the fancy GPU tax to get the better CPU.

ezekiel, (edited )
@ezekiel@hachyderm.io avatar

@paul I've a developer and I used an 8GB M1 Air for over a year - Xcode and video games were the only time I noticed it.

I'm on a 16GB M2 Air now, but for most people 8GB is truly fine, citing myself having lived it.

250GB is much more of a problem for the average user than 8GB of ram.

Edit: 8GB on the Pro is ridiculous, no argument there

Trying this stuff out for the first time: can I not sign into the Apple Developer site with a passkey other than my iCloud account? The UI seems to suggest that's not possible. My iCloud account isn't my developer account, and nowhere seems to present a migration UI

ezekiel,
@ezekiel@hachyderm.io avatar

@stroughtonsmith you can only Sign in with Apple passkeys using account that is signed into iCloud Keychain on that device

What we learned in our quest toward an anonymous iPhone:
✅ Cash is king
✅ Public Wi-Fi can be safer than private
✅ Setting up an anonymous phone is easier than using it

ezekiel,
@ezekiel@hachyderm.io avatar

@themarkup overall like this but there’s some odd things in here.

For example, why do I need a VPN when downloading apps but not other times? Apple still communicates with the phone when an app isn’t actively downloading.

Also, forgetting a WiFi network doesn’t do anything off-device so it doesn’t clean up any digital trail

    I'm looking for a rock solid < 15W pfSense box, that doesn't cost a fortune.

    I could go with one of the various N5105 or N100 aliexpress “firewalls” + USB watchdog timer, but not sure how reliable that hardware is for just sitting there without being touched for months. Plus would always worry about the damned things catching on fire.

    Other choice is actually a Mac Mini 2014, I know they are reliable, won't catch on fire and sip power. But no hardware watchdog option on these…
