I'm brushing up on common lisp after a very long time, and I have to say, who thought of naming four functions that all do different things "=', "equal", "eq", and "eql"?

mdhughes,

@binaryphile I kind of prefer the Scheme naming of
eq? (identical)
eqv? (identical, or = numbers)
equal? (sorta comparably equal)
=, string=?, etc. for specific types

But it really should just be = (equal?) and == (eq?)

Oh no am I about to praise Arc for getting one thing right?

The state of usability of absolutely baffles me.

Like, holy shit, you can't even transfer a bunch of files from the device to another computer without running into 15 different hurdles preventing it.

Meanwhile, every other computer out there: FTP, HTTP and a zillion other ways to do this trivial thing, doable since the 90s.

"but the cloud" - oh. Right. That's why.

mdhughes,

@kzimmermann You mean Android "smart" phones.

On iOS it's pretty decent, most things can use Airdrop, Files/iCloud, DropBox, move them into Readdle Documents or GoodReader and start the local web server, etc., there's a bunch of good SFTP tools, and the UI supports them on all action sheets.

You chose the wrong devices. Aren't all the "foss" types about writing your own solutions? So why don't they do it?

mdhughes,

@kzimmermann If it's so centralized, then it should be profitable to write good software on it. And yet that doesn't happen, either.

Have you been to a LAN party?

mdhughes,

@neil Yeah, I miss those, been 20 years now. Don't really miss lugging the tower, the laptop was better when someone had CRTs already (can't game on a ghosty LCD).

mdhughes,

@chucker @chockenberry @vmstan SNOBOL's pretty neat, like BASIC & AWK (from the future) had a baby and it only did text processing.

When did “song of the summer” become the goto phrase when promoting a song you like. It’s been everywhere for the last while.

Let’s not even grace the term “banger” with any discussion 😬

mdhughes,

@ianRobinson Well the Kids Today™ don't have 40 good songs for a top 40. One a year is the best they can do.

There are a few DC characters I care enough to watch a movie about…

No particular order:
Wonderwoman (oops)
Batman (oops)
Superman (oops)
The Flash (oops)
Dick Grayson & the Titans (oops)
The Martian Manhunter
Miss Martian

I mean, there are probably others. But not on the list? Blue Beetle.

mdhughes,

@tewha I really loved the Ted Kord Blue Beetle comics, Booster Gold crossovers, and he showed up in a lot of fun stuff. He'd be in my top 20.

But ever since Infinite Crisis, they killed him off and the re-creations and resurrections aren't as good, quit reading those.

I intensely dislike it when a metal band tries to cater to conservatives...

Metal is an inherently anti-authoritarian artform.

If you are gonna play it... you better be ready to take up the message for the disenfranchised and the powerless, center it, and use that thunder to punch up.

No, I will not be taking questions at this time.

mdhughes,

@thegibson But some metal bands are non-christian conservatives. Fucking Varg Vikernes. Which makes me nervous when I crank up some angry Viking music and then have to check if the band's shit or not.

I’m collecting videos of my car failing to charge off DC chargers. So far I have three unique chargers.

Service is scheduled for August 4, might as well collect videos in the meantime. So when they say “it’s fine“ I can say “bullshit.“

mdhughes,

@tewha You know how car controllers handle errors? They mostly just reboot in place. Hope you don't need to do anything while that's happening.

mdhughes,

@tewha Almost certainly. There's supposed to be some fallback electro-mech system, so you'd probably still have powered steering?

My early-2000s car is much less computerized, and I dunno how I'm gonna feel safe replacing it.

macOS: I want to right click an application on a dmg and choose "Copy to Applications."

mdhughes,

@tewha What's a right click?

Anyway, Applications is probably on your Dock, and if not you did that.

mdhughes,

@joshua @tewha I do like apps that offer to move themselves if you run from dmg, but I haven't ever done that.

The idea that you can take an LLM — trained on an undisclosed dataset of all kinds of text, and tweaked by human feedback for various messy goals — and then use its responses for social science “research” rather than using real people, is beyond stupid.

While we've been reading "A Princess of Mars" we've noticed quite a few scenes that feel like they could have come straight out of Star Wars.

One specifically sticks in mind where the princess was tied by a chain to a giant slobby bulbous green alien chieftain dude who was threatening to have his way with her and then throw her in a dungeon. The whole thing was very "Jabba the Hut."

There are also several characters that end arguments by saying, "I have spoken."

mdhughes,

@tewha @bigzaphod Massive part of my yout' and of course they defined spacey adventure stories for the century.

All his other series are good fun, Pellucidar's my favorite.

Tarzan is much better than a few dumb movies would have you think, but it veers between "black people are awesome but need a white superhero" and typically racist stuff of the time, he does treat Africans like people he just didn't know much and did fuck-all research.

I have no idea what a homestuck is and now I 'm too afraid to ask...

mdhughes,

@thegibson It's a very long webcomic (3000+ pages, dozens of them flash games). About kids playing a town construction/planning videogame that destroys the Earth [minor spoiler for first 100s of pages], then [major spoilers].

It's eventually very interesting, but whether it's worth doing depends on your patience.
