‘Less than 1% of all downloads come from apps that support the podcasting 2.0 specs, this is something you do not hear the proponents mention.

There's virtually no support on the listener side which is where it's supposed to matter most.’

Appreciate Rob and Elsie having this conversation in public - I've had some of the same conversations in private, but it's good to hear them expressed in the open.

Important to take stock of where things are now, while still looking and planning years ahead.

Elsie has a good metaphor in her followup to Rob comparing to the Apple headset and asks:

‘Is my audience really gonna jump through hoops for this?’

And here's the final part of the segment, where Rob and Elsie wrap things up.

‘I personally think they're really cool, I'm just having a hard time explaining them to my people’

I agree wholeheartedly with much of what they both say. Notably, @theDanielJLewis spent some time trying to do a clearer website to educate more people about Podcasting 2.0. I tried to do similar with podcastnamespace.org as well. It’s got nowhere, and I’m disappointed about that.

@james @js @theDanielJLewis

When podcasters explain certain or all benefits to their own audiences, adoption goes up, often into the double digits.

This is much more powerful than any marketing website will ever be.

Podcasting is not a monolith platform.

That's the mistake the Podcast Industrial Complex keeps making and losing money over.

@adam @james @js "Where there is no vision, the people perish."

What I think we need the website to do is very clearly set and define that vision, so everyone can better understand and re-explain Podcasting 2.0 to others and carry Podcasting 2.0 in our hearts all year long.

@theDanielJLewis @james @js

Set it up! I did the same with value4value.info, which even goes beyond podcasting. I point to it all the time.

Build the website, I'll point to it all day long.

This is not hat podcastindex.org should be doing.

theDanielJLewis,
@theDanielJLewis@podcastindex.social avatar

@adam @james @js Why should the official home of Podcasting 2.0 not be the place for anyone and everyone to learn all about Podcasting 2.0?

Or will you let me build the official site on a new domain?

james,
@james@bne.social avatar

@theDanielJLewis @adam @js @dave I think you should build it. Happy to help.

As you're aware, I have regularly whined that "The Podcast Index" and "The New Podcast Namespace" are two different things. As Marco proves, you can use one without the other.

We should use this criticism to learn and grow Podcasting 2.0, not to retrench behind the singularly unhelpful "podcasting industrial complex" bullshit. If the big boys trusted us and adopted the spec, that would be most helpful.

Tapbots trusted Twitter and it wrecked their company. Apollo trusted Reddit and it wrecked their company. Many podcasters trusted Spotify with their shows and it wrecked their shows.

If/when Apple and Spotify join up and started lending a hand with things, they'll have an equal voice to everyone else and I'll appreciate it. But, I will not chase them. They have a track record of hurting people and projects.
