BroadforkForVictory,

I don’t understand and will never understand the apathy about our climate catastrophe.

Today I saw some blackbirds when walking the dog. It occurred to me they were the first I’d seen for a while. I love seeing blackbirds.

I wonder what species going extinct will I miss the most? It’s always dogs. Today the answer was dogs.

and blackbirds.

I’m convinced that more people are concerned about climate than most think (surveys show this) but we are very stuck about what can be done, plus worn down just paying bills. As someone said to me yesterday- being green is expensive.
Until people either have their needs met or green options are the easy ones, it can be very hard to make the choices they want to.
I talk about climate to people all the time & most people are concerned but feel helpless. 1/2

That’s why people around them making positive choices is so important, like your community composting and no dig plot.
It lets people imagine a different future.
I fear we are going to lose a lot of wildlife between avian flu and climate change.
But we still have time to make it less bad.
(Understand if that is not the way you are currently feeling - I’m in fight for the future mode just now after a particularly low point at the end of the year)

BroadforkForVictory,

@Hellybootwader I think actions speak louder than words. It also helps me to do something, however small, rather than do nothing.

Our own behaviours are the easiest thing we can change. Change happens first between the ears. I’m not perfect, far from it, there are things I can do, should do, but I’m not yet willing to do. There are other things I simply can’t afford to do.

I think the no dig, mulch, green manures, no bare soil, reducing plastic, rainwater harvesting approach to gardening is my token gesture against climate catastrophe.

The compost making is my way of fighting to show people there is another way. I don’t think many people are listening. I hope more will start to hear.

I no longer believe enough people will change until they are forced into it by catastrophic events.

I think you may be right, and I wish it wasn’t so.
One thing that was shown at the start of COVID was that if people understand and are supported massive change can happen quickly.
No one needs to be perfect either, there will always be something more that any person could do, but if everyone does something that makes a big effect & becomes normal and therefore easier for everyone to do the next thing.

@Hellybootwader @BroadforkForVictory I also think that we must care for our own mental health first. The little things, like composting, is our way of starting right with ourselves and building that foundation of caring that we need to face the world.

I would love to chain myself to a gas valve somewhere in a direct action protest but the cruel reality of a capitalistic society means my family would soon be hungry when I lose my job.
