djnavarro,

I have tried my best to keep up with the language. Truly. I gave up my pedantic obsession with the meaning of “ironic”, “literal”, and many many others. But try though I might I cannot stop myself from flinching every time someone uses “exponential” to mean “big”

djnavarro,

NONE OF THESE ARE EXPONENTIAL

mattodon,

@djnavarro who wrote this? The financial times themselves? Certainly not @jburnmurdoch I would guess.

djnavarro,

@mattodon @jburnmurdoch No it’s definitely not from his original writing! It’s from a piece discussing the possible explanations for the trend. The article is actually very good (which is why I didn’t want to link to it and cast data nerd aspersions at the author) and worth a read

KeithDevlin,

@djnavarro A false statement to which one can always correctly append "Not even close". 🙄

@djnavarro No. this is where we dig our heels in. “Growing rapidly” is perfectly adequate!

@djnavarro you've seen the bit from "The Newsroom" where Jane Fonda's character points out that there is literally no word in English any longer that means "literally"?
