Apologies to everyone who has send messages or emails lately. Dealing with some things and I haven’t been around much

I mean I’m all in on the critiques of 21st century tech capitalism, and I am so far from an expert on quantum computing that I feel bad about commenting on this but even so I can’t help thinking that this says nothing whatsoever about modern computing and just says that most people really do not understand combinatorics.

djnavarro,
@djnavarro@hachyderm.io avatar

“Space gets big real fast” isn’t a quantum thing it’s inherent to any system with compositional rules.

djnavarro,
@djnavarro@hachyderm.io avatar

I mean, not to harp on it but the number of grammatically correct op-ed pieces you can write in the English language, even with a very restricted dictionary… that blows up insanely fast, but we don’t make the claim that the existence of natural language syntax renders the modern world inherently incomprehensible, do we? The problem isn’t so much that “tech can do too many things” it’s that “the tech we’ve built does the wrong things”

Me creating a new repo

At long last I think I have an actual criticism of mastodon. I do like it here, but of late I’ve been feeling like if you’re not posting about programming then you’re not really part of the community. Normally I post about code quite a bit, but haven’t really been in the mood lately, and as a consequence I’ve started feeling like I’m not “really” doing mastodon right. Like, maybe we’re just a tech community, and not a general social media site?

djnavarro,
@djnavarro@hachyderm.io avatar

Maybe we’re not the civilised alternative to twitter. Maybe what we really are is a left-leaning slashdot? And that’s not inherently bad, just an acknowledgment that if you want to talk about other things maybe you have to look elsewhere?

In theory, I subscribe to a very particular kind of mind/body dualism: I genuinely think it's possible to describe mental phenomena in a way that abstracts away from the hardware in which the mind is implemented.

In practice, as a human being whose mental state is subject to all manner of peculiar hormonal intervention... oh my no. It is genuinely shocking to realise how drastically your core wants, needs and desires can be modified by a small pellet of surgically implanted estradiol

Amusing work anecdote: for reasons that do genuinely make commercial sense I had to run a linear regression on a data set with n=7 points and ended up with a p-value of .051. Obviously, none of us involved are even slightly tempted to assign meaning to this because we all have stats training and have seen it a thousand times before but it’s endlessly fascinating to me that small-n low-p data look soooo visually convincing even when the evidentiary value is basically nil

Okay. The mere fact that I saw Mark Zuckerberg posting on fediverse today is a pretty good sign that it is only a matter of time before I end up having to see Libs of TikTok or Gays Against Groomers. I had quite enough of that from twitter. I am absolutely not letting that shit back into my life.

Preemptively blocking the entire threads.net domain.

djnavarro,
@djnavarro@hachyderm.io avatar

And on a personal note, yes I am pretty angry that so many people are fine with throwing trans people under the bus. Fediverse is basically the last place left on the Internet that feels safe to me. If threads content starts intruding here and I end up repeating the twitter experience I think that will be the end of social media for me. There’s nowhere else left to go

djnavarro,
@djnavarro@hachyderm.io avatar

@xgranade yeah. It makes me sad, but at the same time I’m not really surprised by it anymore you know? I feel like I’ve gone through a few iterations of this, in profession communities and online ones, and it played out pretty much the same way every time. Trans people try to explain the threat, cis people ignore us or think we’re overstating it, things go bad for us, and it’s us who has to leave and lose our communities. I try not to get attached any more, because I assume I’ll be leaving soon

Ah mastodon. Gotta love a social media network where GLAAD joins and — in the first six replies to their first post — there are three people ‘splaining how federation works and two comments pinging them about the lack of alt-text 🫠

djnavarro,
@djnavarro@hachyderm.io avatar

We really need to work out a better system for encouraging newcomers with good intentions than to welcome them with waves of reply guys

djnavarro,
@djnavarro@hachyderm.io avatar

Admittedly, when GLAAD posted the same content on twitter (I wanted to check it really was them) they got about 80 replies of unhinged bigots calling them groomers, so perhaps we aren’t doing quite so bad by comparison

Fuck me. Okay not only is @huggingface using 91 of my GitHub repos without permission, several of those are private, have always been private, and some of them contain proprietary data that is not cleared for public release. This is extremely bad behaviour, and I don’t even know how they got access to some of them.

I seriously panicked when I first saw that list, because there’s one repo on there that I (mistakenly) thought was a commercial-in-confidence thing that had never been made public. Thankfully that’s not the case, I was confusing it with a different repo that is not listed.

I’m still pissed though. Tech companies really need to learn what “consent” means.

Having the Prime Minister as your local MP is the absolute worst. Next federal election, when some wide eyed ALP flack pleads with me to vote for Albo I’m going to quote his own weasel words back at them and tell them that thanks so much but I am absolutely voting Green.

Ah joy. I see that Australia is yet again having a political fight over the Religious Discrimination Bill and it is truly fascinating to watch as various Christian lobby groups try to simultaneously argue that (a) they don’t in fact discriminate against LGBT people but also (b) if the law is changed to make it illegal for them to do so it will cause the destruction of the Catholic school system. Not sure you can really assert both those things at once my dear

djnavarro, to random
@djnavarro@hachyderm.io avatar

Okay. So.

I have spent a solid half of my day dealing with yet another piece of transphobic garbage written by an academic statistician. It is time I will have to account for to my employer. It is time lost that hurts my prospects for continued employment.

Once upon a time I had to manage these things every day. I lost that job. So I am going to quote Toni Morrison. She is talking about racism here, but (as is often the case when Black women write) it is equally appropriate to transphobia

djnavarro, to random
@djnavarro@hachyderm.io avatar

Somewhat seriously, and yes I realise I’m overreacting to David Colquhoun being an unwitting accomplice to transphobic bigotry, but for the love of god if you read an academic paper and it has passages like this you need to understand that it is absolutely not being “empathetic” to trans people. The dog whistling here is so loud it hurts. You are being played David. Seriously. Learn the rules of the game before you start trying to play in the big leagues

The irony of having been forced out of academia due to transmisogyny among social science academics, having to reinvent yourself in biostatistics, and then having people on mastodon approvingly boosting transmisogynistic bullshit from senior biostatisticians onto your feed. FML

djnavarro, to random
@djnavarro@hachyderm.io avatar

I am angry, so I am going to post this. If you ever write something like this, expect that no trans person will ever speak to you again. And if you approvingly boost posts from people who write things like this, expect that I will probably unfollow you.

djnavarro,
@djnavarro@hachyderm.io avatar

Back when I was a trans woman in academia, I used to have to patiently “discuss” poorly-researched opinion pieces like this written by men (always men) in senior academic positions who knew absolutely nothing whatsoever about trans people and our lives, but nevertheless assumed it was their personal prerogative to opine about what rights I deserve without bothering to do any goddamn reading. I am done with this, and with anyone who does this. It’s reprehensible and immoral behaviour.
