My solar system has been fully commissioned, and generated 6kWh on its first full day.

The array has shading in the winter, so the 3kW of solar won't really reach its full potential until spring. Until then, I do at least have full battery backup for all the power outages we have out here.

@kwf welcome to the rabbit hole of obsession!
Are there FOUR batteries there?

We got 6.9kWh today, and even on an overcast winter days there are long periods where the solar is generating as much, or more than, the house is using!

If you haven't already, check if you can get a variable import tariff, then look at charging the battery from the grid when it's cheap and running from that during more expensive periods. We're saving about 40% just from that.

@M0YNG yeah, four Enphase 5P batteries, so 15kW continuous inverter, 128A surge capacity, 20kWh of storage, so I can run my whole house off grid.

Once PG&E issues the PTO, I'll have to move to a 62¢/kWh peak 40¢/kWh off peak rate plan. I'm not "supposed" to charge from the grid, but I absolutely will be.

@kwf @M0YNG That's the EV rate, right? Exporting to grid off-peak is still somewhat lucrative under NEM 3 if you feel comfortable draining your batteries to deliver night-time solar

@macegr @M0YNG only in August and September under NEM3. But with OhmConnect I've got a lot of other opportunities to export power for advantage if I can figure out how to trigger it.

Plenty of knobs to play with

@kwf that's a different balance to mine. We have 4.4kW peak solar, 9.6kWh storage in a single battery, and a 3.6kW inverter.
Theory is that although we will occasionally generate more than we can invert it won't happen often or for long, and is more efficient more of the time.

Charging from the grid is allowed, even encouraged here.
Our supplier even have tariffs that actively charge from and discharge to the grid depending on demand etc.

@M0YNG yeah. If I had only been concerned about rate arbitrage I only would have gotten two packs, but we lose power so often I want enough capacity to run off grid

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@kwf that's a good reason.
Ours isn't set up for off-grid running. Wasn't something offered by the installer, and a different one could only set up one circuit to run from the inverter and not fail over the entire house.
But it doesn't happen often so 🤷

@M0YNG we have a notable outage about every 6 weeks.

The transfer switch was about $4k on top of everything else, so I figured it was worth it for an extra 10% system cost.

Vive_Levant,

@kwf @M0YNG wait. WAIT. Can you specify just a tiny bit about your price.

insert Anakin/Padme meme, Anakin stating the PG&E fares while Padme asks “is that including taxes and grid access costs ?”

(EDF most aggressive/grid support oriented plan :

  • 22 expensive days a year, peak is 73 ¢/kWh and off peak 13 ¢/kWh
  • 43 standard days with 16 ¢/kWh peak and 12 ¢/kWh off-peak
  • 300/301 base days with 13 ¢/kWh peak and 10 ¢/kWh off-peak
    That’s excluding grid access costs)

@Vive_Levant @M0YNG grid connect is another $15/ month.

Vive_Levant,

@kwf @M0YNG ouch. That’s also 50% more than in France. For a crumpling grid on your side and a correct but could be better one on ours.
