This weekend is packed full of radio.

Saturday morning I am taking my general.
Sunday morning is supporting a local 10k race. Sunday afternoon is the Rockville Science Fair.

I have Friday off and if the weather cooperates, I'll do a POTA activation. 🤞

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@tony @kc3yqi why in the ever loving 🦆 are they using proprietary spyware for this anyway?
Jitsi exists and can be self hosted and works pretty damn well.
They'd probably pay less for hosted jitsi than a zoom licence, and I'd they're not paying for zoom it's even worse!

grumble grumble
I'll ride my high horse into the sunset now

libreoffice, to foss
@libreoffice@fosstodon.org avatar

Look! A feature you may not know about 😉 When exporting a the "Hybrid PDF" option embeds the original file. Then anyone with a PDF reader can view the file – and LibreOffice users can edit it too: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Faq/Writer/PDF_Hybrid#What_is_a_hybrid_PDF_file?

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@libreoffice why is "tagged PDF" not enabled by default?
It's pretty much the most common accessibility issue with PDFs (not being tagged, that's the issue)

According to https://www.carbonintensity.org.uk

9 of the 14 UK regions have a carbon intensity per kWh of generation of less than 10gCO2eq!

All of them are less than 45g, and four are 0 or 1!

The UK average isn't forecast to go above 90g in the next 48 hours (the forecast length)

As the weather gets nicer I'm thinking about getting out on the again.
I'd like to log my paddles, in the past I used my banglejs to record GPS position but it's not working anymore.
There are many cheap GPS trackers available but they all seem to use a sim card to report location on demand, where I want to log to SD or something and get the data out later.
Has anyone got any suggestions?

APRS will be a future project!

People on Twitter are debating whether a person using uncommon words like "delve" are trying to sound smarter than they are, or worse, are ChatGPT bots, because "normal" people don't talk like that.

You don't have to get upset, or embroiled in the debate. Not worth the time or attention. But I'll share some important context as your friendly neighborhood Nigerian 🙋🏿‍♂️

Many Nigerians have bigger English language vocabularies and better command of grammar than the typical American or English person

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@mekkaokereke I get weird looks and/or told I'm being offensive when I say that as a native UK English speaker I love hearing people speak English who don't have it as their native language or (like you!) Do have English as their native language but with a whole different culture.

But I do, it's awesome to hear someone speak something completely perfectly but also completely differently.

Just have to remember it is not waterproof.

It's a long standing expectation that we don't talk politics or religion "on the air" in amateur radio.

But, we're not "on the air" when we use mastodon.radio.

And we have content warnings which are well established on the fediverse.

I'm proposing we update the rules of mastodon.radio to clarify that:
Political, religious, and similar discussions are allowed but must be behind a content warning, e.g. "UK politics" or "religion Christian".

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@arnie_dxer fair question, I think it's probably a great example of an edge case!
I'd like to think people will use their judgement and tend towards using a CW if unsure. I like to think of them more like an email subject line, and your feed of interesting reception reports could work very well in this way.
E.g.
"SWL on HF: Vatican City"
"Online TV streaming: North Korea"

What do you think?

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@arnie_dxer true, although you do already use hashtags!

I think if you're just reporting that a certain transmission exists you're OK without a CW.
But if you're sharing the content, and it's political or religious that would be a good toot to CW.

I'm seeing quite a few requests for various non-existent paths on my website, things like /sftp-config.json and /bak/sql.sql

I'd like to mess with these and slow them down, anyone have tips on easy ways to do that on nginx?

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@k5dru @dl2jml yeah, I'm thinking something that just hangs the response would slow things down just as effectively without burning through data transfer.

What happens to your web server when you post a link on mastodon is that every instance goes off to fetch a preview (pleroma) does this too.

Over a month ago I promised a blog on my Heat Pump and Solar Panels and Battery Storage.

I've finally hit "publish" (well, actually "rsync" but whatever)

It may, or may not, answer any/all questions you have about this. If not, maybe ask me here and I'll try to reply and forget to include that in a future update.

I am particularly irritated at a couple bigger-account "urbanists"/transpo people for not using alt text.

In addition to disregarding needs of disabled people here, this tells us that you aren't willing to listen to/learn the norms & values of the community you're in; & that you do not consider routinely regarding disabled people's needs as your responsibility.

Both of which are very shitty given the line of work you're in.

J.K. Rowling also writes under a pen name of "Robert Galbraith", publishing over half a dozen titles under that name, most of which have TV adaptations.

In all seriousness, what would be required to start a national (UK) amateur radio society like rsgb?

Not to complete directly with them, but to offer an alternative group that aligns explicitly and intentionally with an inclusive ethos?

And if it surpassed their membership numbers...

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

Heck, even if it just got a Significant Number that might cause a change in rsgb...

Can anyone recommend a key manager for ?

I was using OpenKeyChain - but is has been abandoned https://github.com/open-keychain/open-keychain

(Looking for personal recommendations - not search results. Thanks.)

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@Edent I'm using OpenKeyChain, does it need to be actively developed? If it works it works, right?
However I can see the desire to move before it beaks or there is a security issue that doesn't get fixed...
