I don’t understand why people who send me emails to promote their software or products expect me to answer them, even just to tell them I’m not interested.

They sent me something, without any invitation. They want to sell me something, or get me to promote their product. Why would they feel I have an obligation to let them know I don’t want to? Just accept that no answer after a few weeks means « no », and stop wasting time and energy on emails.

@thelinuxEXP I get requests for sponsored blog posts all the time. I guess they don't expect an answer but the hope that it's easier to say yes than to turn them down.
I now answer with a prepared text that asks for an unreasonably high amount of money. I mean if they are willing to talk about that amount, I might probably get weak and have their sponsored post. I might hit gold! 😄

@thelinuxEXP I'm not even that popular on YouTube, less then 10k subs, and I've gotten offers to try out and promote dog collars and all kinds of stuff because some of my videos feature my dog. I can't even imagine what somebody with any kind of meaningful follower count has to put up with.

@thelinuxEXP don’t even get me started. Some of them never give up either, emailing for literally months!

@hen @thelinuxEXP As someone who's had to send cold-emails myself, I always appreciate a response, even if it's a simple "no thanks" or "not interested." That said, I also never hounded people. I sent one email, a follow up a week or two later, and then left it at that (not including unusual situations).

I block people who won't take no for an answer, personally. I don't have the mental bandwidth for a new email I don't care about every day.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@nateb @hen Oh yeah, I don’t have an issue with one email to inform me of something, it’s the « please respond » emails that arrive every 2 days after the previous one that really annoy me!

@thelinuxEXP oddly enough this applies to dating as well. no means no, take the hint and move on. but from a business standpoint, sending a small email for the potential to get exposure/sell more is a low risk, high reward situation, so you're kind of between a rock and a hard place, aka damned if you do, damned if you don't type of situation.

@thelinuxEXP my favorite is when they send me a meeting

@thelinuxEXP simple (and I would expect this is more a rant post than actual question)

Because it's cheap and it works well enough.

Email 1,000 people and 1 may bite. Cost of marketing program is miniscule compared with other marketing efforts.

It's the Nigerian Prince marketing model.

They believe you can be bought up because you're a social media content creator.

    @thelinuxEXP I don't have a youtube channel so I can't understand properly the situation but they should use a little logic: it's a Linux & open-source channel so logically only FOSS should be promoted, but the fact that for example raid wants to promote is absurd

    thelinuxEXP,
    @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

    @bargoderea I’m not against promoting non FOSS things, if I feel they’re a good product that I would use myself, but they shouldn’t expect me to answer them when I didn’t reach out to them :)

    proverb,

    @thelinuxEXP I believe its kind for content creators to reply to commercial request to advertise. Alternately, a content creator can write on their website/social media that no response after a specific period time ( 2 day, 2 week etc) its auto reject. Also they can set auto reject responses after a certain period of no response.

    thelinuxEXP,
    @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

    @proverb If I did that, I’d spend 1h each day writing « no thanks » email. I don’t think it’s fair to expect that from anyone!

    Cultural differences in expectations? You have a very global audience.

    @thelinuxEXP especially when they took no effort to check what your channel is about and why it is or out scope you would ever promote that stuff.

    well, unless its a foss software it is good to introduce them or just mention them somehow in some videos or podcasts.

    @sohrabbehdani I wasn’t talking about FOSS projects, more like commercial offers :)
