hiring a hitman is a complicated game theory problem because the hitman always has the option of just taking the money and calling the cops. you have to convince them that you are capable of hiring another hitman to come after the first hitman, but the very act of trying to hire the first hitman indicates that you don't have a second, more reliable hitman ready to go. so i guess the moral of the story is don't be a landlord. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-05-07/landlord-sentenced-20-years-in-prison-in-murder-for-hire-plots

Every forum we ever contributed to, including the web itself, is being hoovered up as AI training sets. A total solar eclipse is visible across northern Europe and northern Asia, as predicted by Edmond Halley to within four minutes accuracy. He also drew a predictive map showing the path of totality across Great Britain. The original map was about 20 miles off the observed eclipse path, mainly due to his use of inaccurate lunar ephemeris. After the eclipse, he corrected the eclipse path, and added the path and description of the 1724 total solar eclipse.

BREAKING: The House just passed HR 6090, which expands the definition of antisemitism to include criticism of Israel.

Let me be clear. People have rights. State governments do not have rights. This terrible bill sets a dangerous precedent & does nothing to actually decrease or stop the scourge of antisemitism. The Senate should not pass this bill and Biden should not sign it into law.

Trump vows to effectively nationalize local police into a migrant deportation force -- stopping people on the street and herding millions into concentration camps, supposedly before dropping them off somewhere south of the border.

That's grotesque, and terrible, in every way.

But you are naive if you imagine that this national cops squad would be disbanded, or the concentration camps closed, after the mass deportations.

Biology faculty at UT are meeting today to talk about a hiring plan. I really don't envy their job of trying to make a department located in Texas attractive.

We're in the middle of an ongoing purge of black staff, the adminstration just called in the state police to beat and jail students, and no one in their right mind would want to risk pregnancy to have a family here. It's bleak.
