New research finds that former President Donald J. Trump’s tariffs did not bring back U.S. jobs, but voters appeared to reward him for the levies anyway.”

@samlitzinger
That’s because those Americans don’t understand economics.

@samlitzinger Economics must be the science with the most widely rejected findings.

@Slyence @samlitzinger How much of the "Dismal Science" is predicated on assumptions rooted in the wishful thinking of Calvinists.

@terryb @samlitzinger Do you have examples of the assumptions rooted in the wishful thinking of Calvinists?

terryb,
@terryb@babka.social avatar

@Slyence @samlitzinger It was a question, not rhetorical, but I do wonder, and it's an impression I have. It's too amorphous to be specific (especially without my going back to stuff I studied almost 50 years ago). But I'd suggest, for the example, that there are assumptions that individuals are and should be motivated to increase their individual wealth that come straight from Calvinism.

@terryb @Slyence @samlitzinger I’m no economist, but isn’t the assumption that people are motivated to maximize their utilty, not their wealth? I don’t really see where the Calvinism comes in.

    @shekinahcancook @colinrosenthal @Slyence @samlitzinger Exactly. The principle is that you know The Elect who will go to Heaven by their prosperity on Earth.

    @terryb @shekinahcancook @colinrosenthal @samlitzinger yall having an absolutely wild reaction to a study that demonstrated with evidence that Trump’s tariffs were harmful to the economy

    It’s like debating the philosophy of triage in the context of a study that says washing hands is good actually

    @shekinahcancook @terryb @samlitzinger I feel like you know a lot more about how people talk about economics online than actual economics.

    @Slyence @shekinahcancook @samlitzinger How people talk about Economics determines their response to economic policies.
