volpeon,

You know what's extra ironic about phone numbers as ID? Providers recycle them. Someone already sent me a message thinking I was somebody else. It's possible I could gain access to a WhatsApp account or whatever else the person before me used.

@volpeon
high (as in drugs) security techbros when their 10 digit numerical ID isn't unique and they get hacked

@volpeon the reason they do this is so they have access to your personal tracking beacon. china does a similar thing--everyone's accounts are tied to tracking devices so they can find people who post wrongthink immediately. they famously brought a guy to a torture chair for saying chinese cops sucked in a 100 person obscure telegram chat.

NIST has long told people to stop using SMS for security. Twitter was sued using "security" as an excuse to harvest personal data (this was pre-elon, before you blame elon.)
