Open source developers aren’t making their apps available as snaps… so Ubuntu is working on improved snap automation tools to do it for them.

Onomatopoetikum,

@omgubuntu or just let go of Snap. There is flatpak.

Or just let go of Snap!

ianmclean,

@omgubuntu Snaps really are a damaged brand on the desktop. I do think they have real utility though that sets them apart from Flatpaks (being able to set up a Plex server with one command is pretty excellent), but Canonical needs to pay more attention to developers to address what's making Snap so unattractive for them.

@omgubuntu Snap is the single most reason to consider another distro before installing Ubuntu.

@omgubuntu I really cannot wrap my head around any of these packaging formats to be honest. Just using PyInstaller to build a zip, I know it's not ideal.

@omgubuntu yeaaaaah I had an app or two snapped up and then promptly abandoned by Canonical employees. Then I get issues filed about how it is outdated or doesn't work right.

Making it easier for others to snap my apps doesn’t really make the situation better. 🤷

@omgubuntu@floss.social avatar

@cassidy that doesn’t surprise me. I can foresee a “don’t snap my app” initiative taking off 😆

micahbp,

@omgubuntu Maybe they should instead look at why devs don't want to make snaps

AtPlume,

@omgubuntu Isn't that going to result in people flooding repos with issues for a packaging format that isn't even supported by the developer of those apps?

omgubuntu, (edited )
@omgubuntu@floss.social avatar

@AtPlume most likely, yeah - tho that’s already the case as the bulk of snaps by the “snapcrafters” team (which has been around for years) are unofficial packages. I don’t think there’s been a big uptick in upstream bugs* about the snaps. But it’s def a consideration. Unasked burden of support 💁🏻‍♂️

*i’d reason few people install the snap builds for many of these apps. Snap usage seems to be mainly for closed source software as the snapcrafter builds are often out of date

victron,

@omgubuntu "Open source developers aren’t making their apps available as snaps"

Maybe there's a reason for that.

@omgubuntu Or we could just abandon Snaps, right?

@omgubuntu Yeah, there are too many competing standards. I picked one, and ignored the rest. For now anyway.
