Kremlin spokesman says President Putin accepted Tucker Carlson’s interview request because the former Fox News program host “stands in clear contrast to the position of the traditional Anglo-Saxon media.” https://meduza.io/en/news/2024/02/07/kremlin-says-putin-agreed-to-interview-with-tucker-carlson-because-he-differs-from-traditional-anglo-saxon-media

Some may find the term “Anglo-Saxon media” confounding as that particular ethnic group lost power in Britain nearly 400 years before the invention of the printing press.

@w7voa "Anglo-saxon" is a popular usage among neo-Nazis, though. Racialized Anglo-Saxonism was one of the 19th century wellsprings of Nazi racial beliefs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Saxonism_in_the_19th_century

I don't speak Russian, but in German and French "Anglo-Saxon" is an umbrella term for the UK, US, Canada, Australia and sometimes NZ without any racial connotations.

@FlorianTischner @cstross @w7voa Whereas a Saxon is likely to be just an outright nazi these days, right?

Seriously, just because people use it, doesn't mean it's correct.

I think English speakers are the last people in the world who get to complain about the names foreign language speakers use for them.

@duckwhistle @pkraus @FlorianTischner @w7voa Not if it's specifically a self-chosen descriptor by neo-Nazis that is being picked up and recycled in the propaganda outlets of a Nazi state (Russia).

There was a flap a few years ago when some US academics discovered that UK archaeologists and historians use the word "Anglo-Saxon". The Americans assumed that this was straight out of their country's Extreme Right, failing to understand that in the UK context it's just a convenient term for Early Medieval speakers of that language, as opposed to Celtic, Latin, Norse and French. And so they cried "Nazi".

@mrundkvist @w7voa Yeah. Similarly there are historical/linguistic contexts where the word "Aryan" isn't a Nazi dog-whistle. It's just, that's not the way to bet (outside of archaeology/linguistics/history)!

On the other hand, Scandy archaeologists spend most of our conversations with foreigners explaining that "Viking" was an occupation that a young Scandy man had for a brief period before he got killed or bought a farm and got married. Not an ethnic term. And Scandy specialists on the Viking Age mainly study other things than the overseas raids.

@mrundkvist That's very odd as were taught about Anglo-Saxons in middle school, if not earlier. In my head, I can still see my history textbook with the map covered in arrows indicating the migration of the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes.

But this was the 1980s, who knows what passes for history education nowadays.

How is Tucker Carlson being paid for this interview.

Tucker is selling a product: disinformation
Tucker is getting paid by Russia or its quislings in the West for that product.

Rebekah Mercer, Omeed Malik, & Peter Thiel are evading sanctions.

He should be penalized as such by the EU or USA.
