codinghorror,

Poor Things is like a much, much more accessible The Lobster. It is almost as good as Everything Everywhere All At Once which is an unbelievable compliment. See it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlbR5N6veqw

@codinghorror It’s fucken weird. And also great.

@codinghorror Everytime I see the promotional photos, I think that the lead actor is Paul F Tompkins and not Mark Ruffalo, and I get disappointed, because Paul should work more.

I do really need to see this movie though.

codinghorror,

@foxxtrot oh god please see it

codinghorror,

@foxxtrot Ruffalo is so so very good in it, as are all the main actors. Exceptional in every way.

@codinghorror I have seen half of this due to a fire alarm going off in the cinema.

Can’t wait to finish it some day

codinghorror,

@miclgael oh please do. Please.

stooovie,
@stooovie@mas.to avatar

@codinghorror it's a better alternative to Barbie

codinghorror,

@stooovie well I think Barbie is also good but this is a goddamn masterwork.

codinghorror,

It's one of those movies where I literally can't think of a single thing it could do better, or meaningfully criticize.

codinghorror,

"If you encounter any problems, any tensions, any arguing, that you cannot resolve yourselves, you will be assigned children, that usually helps." oh man The Lobster. So good. Bur Poor Things is the best intro. If you like that, go for The Lobster next.

wamonite,
@wamonite@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@codinghorror I did not know of the connection. I loved The Lobster. Was looking forward to see Poor Things anyway!

codinghorror,

@wamonite oh god if you liked the Lobster this is an absolute must watch

codinghorror,

anyways, don't take my word, look at Metacritic: https://www.metacritic.com/movie/poor-things/ and also what the hell is wrong with the movie reviewer at the SF Chronicle!?

mdfranz,

@codinghorror Lobster was unwatchable. And I mostly watch “art” and foreign films and TV. Trailer looked awful.

codinghorror,

@mdfranz Mr. Matt Franz you are now dead to me

codinghorror,

a "141 minute mistake"? Dude, you're a 64 year long mistake as a movie reviewer!

@codinghorror

Someone always gotta be the Contrarian Movie Review.

codinghorror,

@mattdm what the actual hell, man

codinghorror,

@u47 I dunno, these are objectively so good that it's hard to take people who hate them seriously. Go watch cartoons?

u47,
@u47@mastodon.social avatar

@codinghorror I imagine I will very much like Poor Things, but as someone who really did not like EEAAO (but appreciate those who do), I abide by different strokes for different folks.

ristkof,
@ristkof@mastodon.social avatar

@u47 @codinghorror +1, concur with @u47

codinghorror,

@ristkof @u47 it's like people who say "I don't like chocolate". I mean, OK, but are you sure you're an actual human? 👽

ristkof,
@ristkof@mastodon.social avatar

@codinghorror @u47 EEAAO felt gimmicky to me, like Inception or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It also had too much of a “we need to hit the Korean market” marketing feel to it.

Sorry 🤷

I do like chocolate though.

Human, not sure :)

codinghorror,

@ristkof @u47 well, ok, but the academy awards disagree with you 11 times, so objectively.. uh.. that's let's say a "rare" opinion. ;) I could also cite metacritic, but we're good :)

u47,
@u47@mastodon.social avatar

@codinghorror @ristkof I’m allowed my terrible opinions!

(I’m not being paid to write them, tho. Fair enough,)

codinghorror,

@u47 @ristkof it is allowed! It's frowned upon, but it is allowed 😘

ristkof,
@ristkof@mastodon.social avatar

@codinghorror @u47 that's ok, I disagree with the academy awards often. But not always: I loved Nomadland (2021), for instance. CODA (2022) I haven't seen (hadn't even heard of the film).

They're not the holder of "objective good taste” anyway (I'd even argue that that doesn't exist), and they have a lot of clear misses to prove it (quick google: https://parade.com/1350972/maramovies/oscar-snubs/ )

codinghorror,

@ristkof @u47 yeah but 11 is unheard of. That's a HUGE number.

ristkof,
@ristkof@mastodon.social avatar

@codinghorror @u47 now you're trolling right? 11 is not HUGE. That’s one less than 12, which is still not huge. And even it was a gazillion, which is a big number, I'd still not change my mind over it and it’d still not make it an “objective good taste”-o-meter.

codinghorror,

@ristkof @u47 https://variety.com/lists/movies-most-oscars-won/gigi-2/ "The highest number won by a single film is 11, which three films have achieved in the 95-year history of the awards."
