Poor Things is like a much, much more accessible The Lobster. It is almost as good as Everything Everywhere All At Once which is an unbelievable compliment. See it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlbR5N6veqw

mdfranz,

@codinghorror Lobster was unwatchable. And I mostly watch “art” and foreign films and TV. Trailer looked awful.

Just saw my first walking asshole in a grocery store with VR glasses.

Somewhere, there is a person on this instance who used their work email address who must have recently left the company and turned on every email notification mastodon has to offer.

Soooo… many…. Email bounce backs

mdfranz,

@jerry Not me. I haven't left my job just yet and I would never use work email with your instances.

DON'T CROSS THE STREAMS.

Hell is other people: performance management at Big Tech - https://lcamtuf.substack.com/p/hell-is-other-people-performance

mdfranz,

@lcamtuf OH: "The kicker is that the internal perception of this Google-originating process isn’t necessarily any better than that of what it sought to replace. At a great organizational cost, it merely traded the accusations of manager-level favoritism for grander conspiracy theories — sinister corporate agendas divined from the words of secretive, amorphous committees"

My hot take: Google does not have one single visionary leader. Not a one.

https://www.linkedin.com/posts/dhtheriault_my-hot-take-google-does-not-have-one-single-activity-7153269568893775872-9xzp/

“There is a pervasive sense of nihilism that has taken hold. "Well, I guess I will just do the job until they fire me." A lot of people have golden handcuffs situations and aren't going to walk away from the salary, but nobody works late anymore. The buildings are half empty at 4:30. I know a lot of people, myself included, who used to happily do extra work evenings and weekends … That's gone.“

mdfranz,

@assaf @acdha It is not just Google. I think there is a broader existential reassement and question of why we work and who we work for and whether we trust them and whether it is worth our time. But certainly a Big Tech crisis of meaning given the damage they’ve done to society and democracy and our varying degrees and complicity.

It’s interesting hearing my 24 yo son and his fiancé talk about Sept 11 2001. He was about 1 and she was not yet born when it happened.

It makes me wonder how people will talk about January 6, 2021 in 20 years when we have adults that weren’t alive for it. I suppose that, in large part, will depend on what happens this year.

mdfranz,

@jerry Yeah. Unfortunately. 🙏

I trust everyone is having a super productive day at work today, right?

mdfranz,

@jerry Unlimited PTO FTW.

No point in even showing up until next week and the 8th is when "real year" starts!

mdfranz,

@jerry I guess we’ll be swapping out auditors for regulators in our threat models then.

I really want more focused rhetorical flair from CISA tbh. Something like "Every security patch is a failure of process and initiative. They should be extremely rare - not on a monthly cadence. A secure by design product does not have a patch cycle."

mdfranz,

@dave_aitel I guess I’ve been in security (and product companies) too fucking long to believe that is even possible.

mdfranz,

@acdha is that a scooby doo reference?
