#MastoAdmin we're probably all on the same page, but I really hope that the spam prevention measures we develop going forward don't come at the cost of individuals being able to self-host small instances
We're dealing with similar problems as email did in the past. Attempts to curtail email spam wound up with the worst of both worlds - a defacto inability to self host and large amounts of spam
With some ingenuity and work I think it's possible to create a system that is both secure and open
@jenbanim For this attack, folks who had captchas or moderation on signups didn't wind up hosting spam. Those who had neither are on the hook for quickly dealing with spam coming from their instances, otherwise those instances are more trouble than they're worth to federate with.
Small/single user instances won't get caught in this as long as signups are moderated (we had zero spam not signups attempts, for example).
@jenbanim The silver lining here is I don't think the fediverse will suddenly be opt-in for federation. But running an instance is a responsibility, and running one with open signups doubly so, so if you want to do thstz you'd better be ready to hop on moderation issues if they come up.
@jenbanim I run a personal instance and sadly my experience here has been drastically affected. I have created a back up account with a larger instance and if things keep going this way I will be abandoning my personal instance.
@skotchygut Sorry to hear it. I'm tentatively optimistic that better modtools could make self-hosting less of a burden, but of course that doesn't help in the here and now
Somewhat tangential, but I really hope server hopping becomes less of a pain in the future too
@michael Mostly just missing replies and mentions. I have to follow up on threads I've commented in and do the 'view external link' in order to see the entire thread. Occasionally it will catch up if I specifically search for the reply but sometimes I have no way to respond to someone.
@skotchygut how strange. Why do you think that is? Do you think other instances have limited hours? Do you think there’s just so much traffic that your insurance can’t catch up? Any other theories?

Just to be clear, are you commenting on your experience with running a personal instance in general? Or do you believe these things are related to the spam wave?
