@Schouten_B Yeah it's called shifting baselines. It's why there aren't plenty more fish in the sea. We accept the world we are given as normal and don't realize what we've lost because we've never directly experienced it.
I will admit bio-diversity might be a little worse than 40 years ago. But that's mostly just a matter of progression. Humans have been eliminating species for hundreds of years.
But like, if you're not a straight white man, -holy shit- has life gotten a lot better for you over the last 40 years.
@Schouten_B@theropologist I'm pretty sure he's saying he'd like the future to be better for other people than just privileged white guys, because it would make the world better in general, and even then going on this course it doesn't look great for them either. But I do believe that things are better in a lot of ways, that just doesn't mean we can stop, there are real threats and people are losing rights. His fears about Progressives losing hope is real, I see it every day, I hope people will get their heads out of their asses and fight for the future we all want.
@RickiTarr If anything Star Trek is proof that even if we manage to solve all of the great problems of our era, people will just learn to tolerate new ridiculously harmful conditions, like exploding control panels, and video game characters regularly coming to life and trying to kill people in the real world.

@RickiTarr Thanks! A Star Trek future may seem hopelessly naïve today, but I try to take the long view. Plant the tree seeds so two generations in the future will have shade, etc.
