Went for a bike ride this morning. Haven’t ridden outside in a few years. Did just over 2 miles in about 12 minutes. I suppose ya gotta start somewhere.
@rasterweb for your location, getting over to the park with the Oak Leaf Trail in it is a good way to see a bit more trees, the river, and generally something different. All up to you, though.
@mathiasx I'll have to work my way up to that! My first thought was riding in the cemetery near my house. It's a few blocks away and hey, no cars there! I feel like I'm on high alert riding the streets around here. I rode on Appleton and Center today
The issue with going further is that I have to get back home, and right now my legs get pretty tired pretty quickly! Hopefully I can build up some strength and endurance.
I did feel good to be outside again though... I've been hermiting too much.
@rasterweb strength and endurance will definitely come. Also note that many people think that you should be pushing the pedals fairly slowly and hard. (<60bpm) where cyclists typically will pedal 80bpm while cruising and you can shift into an appropriate gear to do so (and if you’ve got the gears. Even on a three speed though, you don’t want to be crawling around in the hardest gears.)
@mathiasx I will consider you my consultant! I have a Trek 7200 and I believe it's 24 speed now that I got it fixed/tuned up. I obviously do not know what I am doing but I'll keep trying to get out there and see what happens.
I've been getting some weird toe/foot pain, so I want to take a break from walking every day or at least mix it up between walking and biking.
@mathiasx That reminds me, if I plan to ride city streets during the day (not at night) would you recommend lights at all? Seat post red light at least so motorist might notice me a bit better?
@rasterweb not sure on the rules there, but fair warning that the military cemetery doesn’t allow bikes on its roads and I try to honor their sign’s request. (But I ride through the Old Soldiers Home next to that cemetery, on my way to the Hank Aaron trail.)
@mathiasx Today's route... Ah, thanks for the tip on the cemetery. I'll take a look. Holy Cross is right near me. I used to walk there a lot but I'll check the rules.
