Forget HDMI and DisplayPort. Can we just make a compact universal analog connector based on RCA or VGA and leave the DRM and royalty shake downs behind?

@dustinrue Theoretically, it's possible to do both. If it's analog, you can still pass a digital signal through both ends of the cable. DB-15 was used for more than just VGA. It's just a matter of both ends of the cable knowing what to do with the signal on the other side.
