@sesivany outright copying the business model they criticized. I wonder if they will copy and paste our legal language on terminating support too.

sageofredondo,
@sageofredondo@mastodon.social avatar

@purpleidea @sesivany are you sure you are not confusing public with a requirement to distribute the source code under the GPL? Red Hat is complying with that.

What the clones were upset was is that we were providing debranded access to the source code for them for the main release of RHEL to easily repackage and we stopped. They criticized us for that, claiming we went closed source. They are now doing the exact same thing. Only providing source code to those that got binaries.

    A employee reported some out-of-tree code broke after something internal was renamed recently in 5.15.y – and as expected was told this is no regression at all, as the does not have a binary kernel interface, nor does it have a stable kernel interface:

    https://lore.kernel.org/all/924449dc-9b1f-4943-afe3-a68c03aedbb5@canonical.com/

    Christoph Hellwig in a reply also wrote: "given that Canonical ignores our licensing rules and tries to get away with it I'm not going to offer any help to Canonical at all."

    sageofredondo,
    @sageofredondo@mastodon.social avatar

    @kernellogger Thorsten, you may want to reword this. Greg KH clearly wrote in the context of kernel drivers there is no stable API. That has always been true.

    The way I read as he was talking about userspace where there is a stable API.

    P.S. Oracle needs to relicense ZFS.

    @bagder they want you to use it and talk about it?

    Took a quick look. In theory you can exchange it without fees at coinbase, but it essentially is tokens that claims to be dollars so the people sending it would have to collect tax info from you.

    https://www.coinbase.com/usdc

    It is funny. How are they suppose to make money with no fees? Seems they skim part of the interest the dollars from the treasuries they hold?

    Pretty sure it was just a lawyer being overcautious due to something internal they do not want to talk about, but any corporate attorney will be grinding their teeth now.

    sageofredondo,

    @hughsie I believe you should always have the © in case court change their view or the law changes. Not a lawyer, you can ask Red Hat's lawyers for more info as why.

    If any of you are running GNOME Shell (on any distro) on Wayland (on any GPU), can you run "nvtop" to see how much GPU memory "/usr/bin/gnome-shell" is using?

    It's using ~50% of the (512MiB) GPU memory here. Is that normal?

    sageofredondo,
    @sageofredondo@mastodon.social avatar

    @popey I was not expecting something starting with nv to work for Intel graphics. But it does, barely. Shows the percentage used, but not memory; using Fedora 39 GNOME Wayland Intel 12th gen Alder Lake graphics.

    My Nixos experiment was going so well… genuinely I am a bit miffed by this!

    Alas, I am having repeated hard lock ups with large zfs replications.

    Things I have tried:

    • memtest for 5hours. ✅
    • s-tui cpu stress test for 3hrs. ✅
    • booted in a live Ubuntu iso and performed the same zfs replication for 2hrs. No lock ups.

    Because the machine just hard locks I get no stacktrace or kernel panic to help me here. No logs I can find or anything.

    So it’s got to be one of the following.

    • A hardware issue. I’m not ruling this out because even though the majority of the system was untouched there is a new HBA (LSI 16i) in there. And a couple of new SSDs.
    • A software issue. Is there something in the Nixos implementation of zfs that’s causing this? Seems so unlikely but I think I owe it to try a different OS today for testing.
    sageofredondo,
    @sageofredondo@mastodon.social avatar

    @ironicbadger not necessarily. I have had hard restarts where it was so severe for the kernel it just restarted without being able to drop down to the code to print the stack when I was testing Core Scheduling when it was out of tree.

    If this hardware works on other distributions then it signals to me it is a software issue.

    You need to post more info. Kernel and openzfs.

    sageofredondo,
    @sageofredondo@mastodon.social avatar

    @ironicbadger what is the kernel and openzfs number?
