In January, a few minutes before my Dad's funeral started, I messaged my therapist to thank him for spending 7 years helping me work through and heal the scars from my childhood. I realized sitting there that I had already dealt with the baggage, and all that was left was gratitude and sadness...
During the funeral service, as I was listening to my kids talk, it occurred to me that my kids are a lot like me - but much freer - they don't have a lot of the baggage I carried already at their age - and I realized I owed my therapist another thank you note.
We all come from different places and have different things to overcome, but our own growth and healing are maybe the most important works we engage in as humans.
