@hynek We had Deb Nicholson on @djangochat recently (one of my favourite episodes). We discussed Open Source vs For Profit Funding and such. She made the point that “at some point the bill always becomes due” (much better than I can relay it) and that you have to consider what happens at that point.
@carlton@djangochat thank god we have no foundational tools in the community that could be affected by a move like this and/or people getting really angry if one would point that out. hypothetically.
@quentinpradet I personally don’t care and I’m just as upset at the cloud free-riders like AWS who cause this. But you can see this is just the beginning of a stream of Bad Things. E.g., Hashi who is ahead of the curve and made a similar move recently, is now looking for a buyer. This will not end well.
@quentinpradet@hynek IMHO, there’s nothing wrong with any license per se. The act of switching license after having built a large community of users and contributors however — absolutely despicable.
@anderseknert@quentinpradet I’m past judging. People operate in systems that they don’t control and I find it more important to plan ahead and not be continuously surprised by broken promises that never could’ve been kept.
@hynek@quentinpradet what makes you say that? Most projects don’t do rug pulls like this. All agreed on planning ahead though, and even more so in the light of these recent moves.
