Any car repair or knowledge about car stuff? 2018 Santa Fe Sport Hyundai. I hit a full 5 gallon bucket of something unknown in it last night. It was in my turn lane and couldn’t go over left or right to avoid it, heavy traffic. All seemed ok. Overnight though? 4 miles to Costco and hear big flapping sounds from passenger side back rear tire. I can’t bend over well but got photo under car. Is something missing or can you see anything to check. Am in a store lot. Contemplating what I should do.

@cobalt behind the suspension arm with the barcode on it is a black tubular thing...looks like plastic...is that something that got jammed in there? Find someone spry enough to see if that's loose or can be pulled out.

@cobalt it might be a dampener... lighting isn't enough to tell

Maybe a clue? If I drive the loud flapping sound comes at 40 mph or faster. None at 36-38 mph. I too a chance in driving 2 miles straight down the road and now in parking lot for Costco. I do have AAA so that’s not any issue but I’d hate to have a tow and then a mechanic shop takes a few days to tell me - “no big deal”.

@cobalt if it’s only at that speed, it might be that the bucked knocked loose a body panel or rear bumper panel, and now it’s flapping in the wind. You may not see anything wrong when it’s parked. Could be as simple as a couple of broken $0.99 clips.

I'm betting on basically this, inside the wheel well. Most cars will have some flexible rubber covers around suspension components that just attach to the inner fenders with reusable plastic rivets. The rivets aren't super tough, but they are easy enough to replace.

I tend to agree with this. I had two corollas that eventually had this problem. Both times the plastic cover tore off from the rivets. Scary af when you get the noise all of a sudden.
