There’s been an especially nasty undertone in my mentions the last few days, including from someone who I’ve known for a while and whose thoughts and insights I respect. I’m saddened by this, and also baffled.
I’ve obviously offended a number of people here, presumably with my questions about Threads and Meta. I apologize. My questions were genuine, but it seems pointless for me to engage in any further discussion of the subject, given the clear passions that others have about the topic.
@mattblaze It’s rapidly becoming a third-rail topic, for sure. I posted something that included the words “fuck Zuckerberg” on Friday, and it fell so short that it still earned me a couple of blocks and comments that I should be hanging out with Nazis. 🙄

There is a reasonable fear of the fediverse being overrun by the bullies, racists, and ‘phobes who made other platforms intolerable, plus the reasonable fear of increased surveillance and being packaged and sold as AI fodder.
There are the Nopes, the WaitAndSees, and the TrustThePlan people who think some level of blocking will save us/them. (1/2)

It all happened before around quote-boosting.
It’s still happening around generative AI.
It’s going to happen again with BlueSky or other bolt-on communities.
That each technical change requires a collective debate over cultural impact is probably a good thing, but I sure would like to see more civility, inclusion, and democracy around it. (2/2)
