@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs I am in an undergrad program for Clinical Psychology and they require an ABA class and Lab. The Lab is working with someone implementing an ABA treatment plan. I hate it. I have so many ethical concerns but those are ignored. So I am stuck with either walking away and not completing my degree or do this lab. It is keeping me up at night. I am so sorry this is still going on.
@path72 I even turned down an IEP plan at school. Any sort of option we could come up with was against their wills, so I said no. I feel so weird about it but know it is right. Before that I turned down early intervention ABA.
@path72 my daughter isn't non-verbal but she is autistic with selective mutism, and I think since she primarily communicated through drawing pictures and then writing when she learned how, she became a gifted writer and storyteller to the point of teachers telling me it is savant level. I really don't think that would have happened if anyone had made her speak.
@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs Saw an ABA post and immediately knew how negative it could get. Yes ABA is the best current practice, not all will benefit, and punitive practices should not be part of it. But all every one ever heard about are the punitive practices in ABA.
I think about this all the time when I'm trying to change my dog's behaviour, but it's the first time I've seen somebody else spell it out, and the first time I've seen them (correctly) link this to our treatment of neurodiverse people.
