my mastodon server's been really struggling with running all these git polls & discussions -- there's a lot of federation to do, and when I made a new post it would take up to 45 minutes for that post to actually get sent to anyone because the server had to chew through 20,000 federation events
so I upgraded to the $89/month masto.host tier to see if that helps
(not looking for advice, just sharing what it's like to run big discussions on mastodon. masto.host has been great.)

on a positive note: this week I read that folks are working on nomadic identity for ActivityPub (https://wedistribute.org/2024/03/activitypub-nomadic-identity/). I haven't looked into it too deeply but it gives me some hope this stuff will get easier over time. Maybe one day I’ll be able to join a bigger server and share resources more efficiently but keep control of my identity!
@b0rk as someone who doesn’t follow the internals of Mastodon all that closely, what do you mean by control of identity? How worried should I be that I’m using someone else’s instance? 🤣 The only thing that comes to mind if “what if they turn it off” but unless everyone runs their own instance on their own hardware that’s always a possibility.
a) if you migrate to a different instance, you can't migrate your posts, only your followers. that's a big deal for me.
b) also when you migrate followers, some of your followers won't migrate automatically if they don't use mastodon. you can see that if you look at @b0rk's account (the account I migrated away from -- about 300 people never migrated). this doesn't matter to me as much though.
@quixoticgeek nope! all of the work is funded by people buying zines at https://wizardzines.com, this is far from our biggest expense. We're doing fine, but I always appreciate people buying zines!
